Bump! The original jug in this was very tired. So I took a chance ad bought an Emerson/DuMont 17BJP4. Nice bright picture

The neck on this tube was shorter and the centering magnets/ion trap sits nearly at the socket (for the brightest pic). any problems with this?

Looking good. According to the RCA datasheet, 17BJP4 doesn't use an ion trap magnet. Maybe you could remove it entirely?

I might try that again. The "new" tube came with a yoke, centering magnets, ion trap and a socket, So I put the trap back on it.......

EDIT: Took it off. Much sharper picture!

If the tube displays a picture without an ion trap then it's gun wasn't designed to have an ion trap.

The datasheet may say that that type of tube should have an ion trap, but rebuilders often stuck straight (non-trap) guns in tubes that originally had traps and vice versa....Some rebuilders did these things as upgrades, most that did it because it's easy to loose the ID tags in a rebuild and forget exactly what you have.

most of the time , you can see an angled element as a visual tip off of a tube needing an ion trap, like seen here.

MOST of the time, anyway! :P
