Betacam SP tapes have the same shell as home Betamax tapes and can be used in Betamax decks.

actually, no not at all

Betacam SP tapes have a different formulation of the tape and will damage the heads of a home beta vcr in no time..

however..

the older oxide betacam (not betacam "SP") can safely be used in a domestic beta deck

Betacam SP tapes are metal or metal-equivalent. They can be used in ED Beta VCRs; I have a bunch of those tapes. The longest of the small-cassette ones, BCT30 maybe, is the equivalent of an L-750 Beta cassette, which is nice becasue Sony never sold an official '750 for the ED Beta format. There were only EL-250s and EL-500s.
