My back is killing me; just looking at these photos. We need to pitch in and build Nick a double-wide work bench.

Working on the floor ain't the worst. I've never had a bench and am fine with that, though I'm still young and can take it.

I did enough of it when I did in-home TV service. Also as an industrial electrician. I have right now, which they refer to as "electrician's knees."

Doesn't really hurt much, I'm used to lounging around the (Navy) ship on whatever is available. I once fell asleep on top of a aircraft fuel tank that was sitting sround on the flight deck...Believe me, it could be worse. Once I sell the CTC-7, I'll have more room in the spare berdoom to fool around so this stuff will likely get moved in there.

Ya could always banish the 7 to the garage and set up shop in the spare room if the project in the living room annoys your gal.

It gets better...wait for it....

Now I find it has a horizontal waveform going to the grid of the 6CD6, and I can hear the vertical section working too. Both vert and horizontal hold controls work as advertized, anyone dare me to stick the output tube in?

Wow, very nice!

I'd imagine flys for the prototype are super-unobtainium so I dare you to make sure (double or triple check) all is right with the horizontal before puting in the output tube and meter the cathode current on the first power up. With how unique this set is it would be somewhat tragic to get over zealous and cook the fly.

It is exciting to see progress on the electronics.

I'm on tender hooks now! To see this prototype set being woken up in sections from its long slumber is quite something. Yeah I dare you to stick the flyback tubes in there too ..No seriously, don't until the time is right. Cheers

Very slick, Nick!

I can't tell-have you replaced or restuffed all of the paper and electrolytic caps on this chassis? If not, I would be afraid of powering up the horizontal output tube.

Second that. Also, make sure the H oscillator frequency is right before running the whole system. Possibly having it sputter because it's too far off (or just having it free-run at a low frequency) would be hard on the output and flyback.

I think Harry was watching this one well into the 90's, he just didn't want to spoil the fun.

Smile

You are doing a great job on this set. I'm excited to see the results.

Quick question: this chassis has a control labeled 'Horiz Phase'. Anyone have any idea what the purpose of this control might be? It's a pot connected at one end to the cathode of the horiz output tube which sits at around 25 VDC, other end appears to go to pin 5 (grid) of the 6BQ6 (pulse reg?). Wiper is connected to the cathode circuit of a 12AT7 tube, which I'm assuming has to do with HV regulation since it takes an error voltage from an external winding on the horizontal output transformer, and also has a connection through a plate cap to the grid of the 6BQ6.

Bad news...

Scratch that. Reading from the plate cap of the horizontal output tube to the cap of the HV rectifier shows infinite resistance, where I would expect to see less than 500 ohms. Looks like the horizontal output tranformer is bad.
