Sylvania Exponent 4/40 Suitcase Record Player
I would like to remove the cloth grills on the speakers. They seem very difficult to remove and I don't want to do any damage. Are they tacked or glued on? Any advice on removing them will be appreciated. Thanks.

Never owned a Sylvania phono (have owned 3 of their tube TVs though). Got any pictures of the unit to give us an idea how it's put together.
Typically grille cloth isn't designed to be removable, though the boards it mounts to usually are designed to be removable (usually the speaker comes along for the ride with the board and cloth) though you often have to open up the cabinet to remove the speaker board. Some sets glue the cloth, some sets staple, others hold it in with compression. Once you get the board separated from the cabinet it should become obvious which method holds the cloth to the board.

A friend of mine back in '63 or thereabouts got a Sylvania Exponent 4/40 for Christmas. That system sounded great! Garrard turntable, I think a Pickering moving magnet cartridge, bass and treble controls... speakers sounded quite good for their size.
I've been on the lookout off and on for a 4/40 or the one with a tuner 4/60 I think it was, complete with speakers locally. I don't trust shipping something like that. I've seen a bunch of them on ebay over the years missing the speakers. I have seen some with changed grille cloth but I have no idea how they got it apart to do that, if it isn't obvious in person. Nice portable! |

Sylvania 4/40 Speaker Grills
Thanks for the comments. I figured out that brads are holding them on. Used a flathead screwdriver and off it came. Pics below--has a 6" woofer and a 3" tweeter. Excellent sound.

Like I said I've been looking for one good shape, locally.
Here's a service manual for that on ebay Not sure what the "-1" on the model number designates, some minor product change made I guess. https://www.ebay.com/itm/35450893270...&segname=11021 Another manual without the "-1" https://www.ebay.com/itm/31410060583...Cclp%3A2047675 Last edited by Ed in Tx; 01-10-2023 at 09:27 AM. |

Back about '73 I did some work for a BIG Sylvania dealer. There
audio line was VERY good, up with the big JA brands. It had an almost tube quality sound to it. They didnt sell much of it but at least the big receivers were actually built by Sylvania. Plug in' semis too 73 Zeno LFOD ! |
