I almost missed that cap on one of my newer Portacolors. When they fail, the HV decreases, and the HOT red plates. It looked a lot like a horizontal drive problem. Even my Portacolor II had a pair of those caps near the HOT. The caps were running red hot and needed to be replaced.

From my understanding tho, it works great. Better than the 1975 version I gave him that needed work.

Cool looking forward to seeing your buddies new portacolor hope to see a new thread started soon. I have a few myself, nice since they do not take up a lot of space. like to see this one side by side with the 1975. I did that with the same programming on just to compare the pic quality.

I'll get after Walter to start a thread!
In my opinion.. I liked the pix on the 68 better than the 75.
I've seen it since he got it home, and I'm jealous! (ha)

The early one with the all the controls on the side is my fav (think it was the 1st) but it had the large bore crt, that one with the small bore crt is the best.

Living in Toronto is about the closest alternative to living in the U.S.

We also have about 1/10th the population, which isn't really a bad thing.

Other than the SAMS Photofacts, are there any other service manuals or service literature available for the PortaColor?

This is just out of curiosity, as I recall some of you have mentioned that there is errata in the Photofacts.

Might be covered in Beitman's (spelling?) manuals as I think they lasted at least to 1970...

The 1970 Beitmans covers the HC chassis.
Sams 1384-1 covers the last production 10HE's, dated 4-74. Those sets used the Hi-volt focus CRT and a different flyback and 12JF5 horizontal output, with a 1DG3 HV rectifier.
I have two10HE's, one with 1975 code dates and one with 1977 code dates.
I feel the 1977 set is the last of the run.
Then, there's the HB, which is covered in Sam's 808-3.
The HC is covered in Sams 883-3. It seems that model was built in 1969-70.
The HD is in Sams 1223-2, referred to, similar to chassis and the last P/C to use the low focus voltage type CRT.
