How good was broadcast NTSC/PAL in practice?

Back when motel sets still had physical pots for adjustment instead of firmware menus, I alway carried a "greenie" (small green-handled screwdriver) to adjust the set in my room. It almost always needed it, sometimes because the set was wrong, but often because the analog cable system was different on every channel.
