Around the time I started driving one of the gas stations in our town still had these 70's era whiz-bang gas pumps with heads that swiveled (depending on what side of the pump you parked on) and they used tube displays. I just can't remember now whether they were numichron or nixie. Surprised I could forget!

If the digits were 'shaped', they were nixie tubes. If they were 7-segment and orange, it was either Numitrons or Panaplex displays. Here are some pictures of all three types:
