WNET in the 60's...

Found this clip on Youtube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew6DS2bXYmk

There's a whole bunch more on her channel.

I'm guessing this was recorded on a quad originally, but holy hell, this tape's well preserved - you generally don't see old videotape with this kind of quality to it.

Am I right that this would have been recorded to a quad machine, or was anyone using helical for broadcast back then?

Tape from this period is always a puzzle to me - no idea how many times it was re-recorded and processed before it got to YouTube. I see some image orthicon halos, but no video noise - so, was it there but all removed in later processing? Hard to say. I see no quad banding whatsoever, but again, my understanding is that by the mid 60's quad tape was getting to near perfection, and the automatics on the top machines did a much better job of playback of old tapes than the original recording machine could.

Looks like i found my answer:

Looking to the righthand side, you see 16 or so glitches. It's quad. Also, the playback machine seems to be having trouble with this clip.

I wonder when it was transferred to digital, how many generations and all. It'd be neat if the entire program could be put up, because it's a neat look into how TV must have looked back then...

Remarkable is also the audio, apparently captured with a boom mic. I have not seen recordings of a performing singer done this way before.

And the video looks to me as if pretty heavy noise reduction has been applied to it.
