The preferred IOs for color had a different mesh/target spacing to allow a greater dynamic range without going over the "knee" of the transfer curve. Don't know if GE produced them or not.

Interesting that. Also contributes to the reduction of the halo effect when pointed at bright objects.

Thanks for the IO curve data, makes me wonder how a colour pictures would look from a three 3 inch 5820 IO configuration, guess there will be a lot more haloing.

Actually, the haloing had to be avoided no matter what tube was used, as, for example, it was found that bright red clothing would produce a bad-looking cyan halo that would extend into the performer's face. So, a 5820 properly set up for color would mainly have a much poorer signal to noise ratio than a close-spaced tube.
CBS noticed the same red problem in their field-sequential system and wrote an internal memo about it. |
