I see Tim picked up his find today as reported in the classifieds. Look forward to a further discussion on the Arliss.

When I saw this thread I half wondered if it was the set I was going to pick up. I'm sure it wasn't though......this guy didn't have any idea it could be.anything valuable. He had it for sale at a consignment shop for a couple months with no activity and the only thing he could think to do with it if he couldn't sell it was gut it for a bookcase.
It never occurred that watching TV on it might still be an option.....

Glad you got it Tim. Just to THINK--that was on it's way to being turned into a BOOKCASE ? Let them go BUY one by Sauder !! NOT destroy an irreplaceable vintage TV set !!
Now--it WILL be preserved. Hope the tube is ok--BOTH of the ones I ran into in recent times (supers) had GREAT tubes in them !! |

If it helps, I replaced a few tubes in a CTC-5 for a friend about 7 years ago.
All the tubes I replaced had to do with the tuner and IF sections. Just for giggles, I checked the CRT on my CR-70. OEM, too. It checked at 93% on all 3 guns. Beautiful picture. I kept it for a week before I let it go back to its owner. I simply watched it all week.

I picked up a Whitby CTC5 a couple of years ago in Toronto. It sat on Craigslist for a week and the previous owner said I was the only one that called. It too was a low hours set.
I wrote earlier about some of the design shortcomings but after repairing it, it has been a solid performer. The only downside with mine is that the CTC5 seems to have a design issue with the HV supply. Others on this forum have alluded to the same. The brilliant upside is the 21AXP22A survived almost as new perhaps there was less stress on the tube?. I have my fingers crossed that Tim will find the same. |
