62 years ago today

On this day in 1955, the first World Series to be broadcast in color began - NY Yankees vs. Brooklyn Dodgers.

(The first color broadcast of a MLB game was by CBS in August, 1951)

It would be difficult to pick out one year that "Beat" 1955.Lessee,the '55 Fords & Mopars weren't quite as hot as the '55 Chevy was, but they weren't far behind. "High Fidelity" was all the rage in home music,a system that sounded good then likely still will today.TV had come of age, you had the beginnings of color, which would soon be bigger than anyone could have imagined. WW2 was receeding in peoples' minds, America & most of the rest of "The West" was enjoying the hell out of10 years of peace. Even Germany, our erstwhile foe was growing from strength to strength, having hitched their wagon solidly in "The Allies"column. Indeed, for the next 10-15 years anyway, there was not much to spoil the party...

Hard to believe they were playing the World Series in September back then. Compare that to now, 10 teams make the playoffs and it isn't uncommon for the 'Series to spill into November.

Also worth noting, Vin Scully was one of the announcers for that '55 World Series. And he only retired a year ago.

High school ('58-62) had one large black and white TV that was used only occasionally in the classroom. The teacher in charge of audio/visual equipment and us geeks who ran the projectors would "discover" that the TV had been sitting all summer in the Chicago humidity, and of course had to be baked out when the World Series happened to be on. So, we got to watch the game during off periods and became the town criers when teachers would stop us in the hall and ask what the score was.

One week before that World Series, I bought my parents an RCA 21CT55 color set. I was working at the local TV station, and got the set from the RCA distributor at a great price of $500. They had 20 people that invited themselves to see that World Series, sitting in their living room. Good times!

Even as late as 1966, when we got our first color set, it was an occasion for neighbors to come over and see it.

I do wonder about 1951 and what the CBS color system would have looked like for sport... fast moving objects and spinning wheels flicker ....

I remember watching some of the early White Sox games on channel 9 and although the color of the ball park was a Hunter green, the outfield walls always came off as blue.

That’s the year (1966) I bought our first color TV for the family and myself. I put up a tripod and the largest Jerrold antenna with rotor you could buy. Milwaukee was about 85 miles North. We could watch the Cubs games on channel 9 crystal clear. Those days were exciting.

I remember watching NBC football broadcasts in the late '60s-early '70s on channel 3 in Cleveland. The network used a system they termed the "NBC Tracer" in those days; it was probably an early form of slow-motion video. When the system was in use, the words "NBC Tracer" (using the NBC "snake" logo) appeared at the bottom of the viewer's TV screen. I was watching the games in b&w back then, as we didn't get color TV until 1972.
