Yes, and in doing so the picture has to be pulled in from the top and bottom about two inches.

So your video source is "letterboxed" 16:9 format? Or perhaps 16:9 format squished to 4:3 (as some of the sub channels do)?
What is the source of the oreo picture ?

The Oreo is from a commercial on Hulu. I have my Roku box set to 4:3 aspect ratio.

Reduce the height to where the raster is just filling the screen from top to bottom. If the Oreo is still too tall, the problem is with the setting in your Roku box, not in the TV.

Well, I figured out the cause of my Linearity problem. It was source formatting error. I have been watching The Orville almost everyday on Hulu through my Roku box. The program filled out the screen completely as seen in the Oreo commercial photographed during the show. Today, without changing any settings, The Orville comes on letterboxed with perfect linearity including the commercials. As for the Archie Bunker photo, that was from a sub channel of one of our OTA digital stations. I tuned in again tonight to All In The Family and it is formatted too wide as my earlier photo shows. Turns out there is nothing wrong with my television set. I should not have attempted to adjust the picture. Some idiot was controlling transmission.

Before the digital transition, none of this was ever a problem. The world no longer fits inside a 4:3 screen, especially a round one. I appreciate everyone’s helpful suggestions. I was ready to pull the chassis and rebuild the whole vertical circuit. I should have known a Zenith TV would not be the weak link in this chain of converters, streaming boxes, modulators and cables. Remember when you could just plug in a set and switch it on?

Sometimes it is good to have a 60's-80's hardware-based test pattern generator as a sanity check during/prior to adjustments since modern sources can be a bit bonkers.

I agree. i probably should invest in a B&K television analyst. I don't have a good source for the standard Indian head test pattern. I do have a crosshatch generator but that does not cover everything.

Sencor VA48 & VA62 are reasonably priced now. They will do
damn near everything. Be sure it has the BIG manual with it
if you go that way. There is also a quick use guide. Also a
cheap fixer upper I would not buy.
