Greetings from Halifax, Nova Scotia

Hi everyone,

I have gotten into collecting solid-state table-top TV sets from the 70s and 80s. I don't actually have any 70s sets at the moment, but I'm hoping for a Zenith that uses one of those electronic-ultrasonic remote controls. My collection started in March when I picked up a free 1987 Sony Trinitron, the exact model being my username. It works fairly well, but I have to turn the sharpness up all the way to get a good picture. Last month I got an RCA XL-100 whose original owner purchased it in 1987. The owner originally wanted 30 dollars for it but ended up giving it to me, I guess he liked my enthusiasm for these things. :-) Most recently I bought a 1982 RCA ColorTrak model FGR4/8WR that wipes the floor with the Sony as far as sharpness goes. Certain front panel buttons need cleaning, but that is its only ill. The simulated woodgrain cabinet is nearly perfect. I just don't care for the styling of newer TVs; when I got the Sony cleaned up, set up and verified working, my 2005 Sanyo 20-inch flat-screen CRT set went to the curb for someone to take.

I also like stereo equipment of the same vintage, mainly tape systems, but I guess I'll save that for audiokarma.

Cheers

Your sets are great examples of the respective heydays in the 80s, the 1982 RCA sure does beat the later one.

Sony and Mistubishi of the 80s were some of the best IMHO

Welcome to the TV funhouse KV-1926R!

Good thing too, as that decade is the one I choose to live in most of the time. Lots of sets of this vintage were around when I was a kid. Got to keep an eye out for a Mitsubishi set too. I believe there actually was one in my household back in the day, Electrohome branded though.

Now, you need to start you a collection of the "Teency-Tinecy" 1.5", 2", & such CRT sets from the Eighties....Panasonic, JVC, Sony, & a couple others made a blue Jillion of 'em Back In The Day..

^ In regards to that, I think having a Commodore SX-64 would be pretty boss.

Hello my fellow Nova Scotian!

How's the TV finding old TVs and such up that way? It's terrible down the valley, I have to drive a long way to get anything at all.

^ Hey. :-) It's great here, just scored a fourth TV today. More about that in an upcoming thread. Where you are, you probably see most of the older cars I really like, practically none of that around here. I believe I was on a trip to Wolfville when I saw several of my preferred vintage in one day.

The Digby-Annapolis Royal area. I don't see a ton of old cars, but a few nice ones here and there. Ananpolis is really good for the *really* old ones.

I prefer the mid-70s to mid-80s compacts and subcompacts, my favorite being the base model 1981-82 Mercury Lynx (re-badged Ford Escort) 2-door in medium blue metallic with medium wedgewood blue interior and a 4-speed. In all seriousness, if I were to get one I would install one of my factory 8-track stereos, another unusual love of mine. My current avatar is an old pic of me next to a 1984 Lynx.
