Capacitor ESR meters
The amateur radio magazine "QST" April 2014 issue has an article about theory and plans to build a capacitor tester ESR meter. It is interesting and a good project to build.

Too bad I'm not a ham; that sounds like it would be a good read.

ESR meters are easy to build. Put a high frequency current through the capacitor and measure the voltage drop. The frequency has to be high enough to neglect the reactance, so all that's left is the resistance.
You can get fancy by using a bridge but then you have a bit of calculation before you get ESR, not convenient for quick tests. There are lots of ESR meter projects on line. I started to build one until I found out my bridge automatically reads out ESR. |

Tom, you can buy QST magazine over-the-counter in some stores. Certainly, you could at Amateur Electronic Supply in Milwaukee if that is anywhere near you, but also maybe at some electronic-parts dealers or larger book/magazine stores if you have any accessible to you.
The circuit is similar to what is in my Creative Electronics ESR meter from around 1980 that works very well.
