Realistic multiband radio garage sale find
Picked up this Realistic radio today. AM/FM/CB/VHF/UHF/SW All works except AM and the dial lamp. Only paid $2 so I figured I couldn't go wrong. Have not seen one of these in years. Also picked up a NOS 45 Tube today for $5. They were trying to get ebay prices but told me take it for $5. There was a bunch of other tubes in the box but I did not have what they wanted for them. I only needed the 45. Wish there were 2 though.

Very nice find, especially for two dollars. That was when Radio Shack was still making some of the better multi-band radios on the market. Not long after that, they started getting cheap and doing things the junk brands used to do such as combine FM and VHF-High into one band but split the dial display so it looked like two separate bands.

Has 3 VHF bands, 1 FM. Yeah, the good 'ol days of Radio shack are long gone.

I had a buddy had one of those Patrolman radios. He was using it for a shop radio, all full of sawdust and paint spots. I remember it was pretty hot and had a great vernier feel to the tuning. I should have traded him for it.

Through the 80s I would drool over sets like this at RS. They were always just a little out of my reach. Later in the decade they had a model with a UHF (?) band. I saved up enough cash just as they discontinued it; the local dealer managed to find me the last one around. I would take it to the high school football games and tune in the live remote broadcast directly (what they were feeding to the station) which could be kinda entertaining. Then one day my Mom needed a radio to take to the beach and should used it. It got soaked...and she threw it away! Oh, well...

One of my neighbors had one of those radio's that needed a dial re-strung. I looked at it and couldn't figure it out. I ordered a service manual for it from R/S. It was one of the best repair manuals I've seen in a while. Needless to say, it was a tricky dial to re-string. After that, I had a little more respect for R/S and their products.

This thread got me looking through my collection of Radio Shack/Realistic multibands. Thought I had two or three; turns out I have four. All but one of 'em look beat to s--t, but 3 out of 4 work! Also the three that work are all pretty hot on AM and FM broadcast, too. Fourth one needs dial re-strung. Dj, what is your source for dial strings for these?

Einar, no, bandswitch works fine on mine. Only problem with it is, it works on A/C but not on batteries. If you're interested in it, send me a PM. It's in pretty decent shape otherwise.
