Testing ALL DIGITAL AM Radio, Seattle area.

http://radiomagonline.com/currents/k...hd_radio_0930/

Interesting! I have no idea how well this might work... IBOC hybrid digital/analog has IMHO, been very disappointing on the AM band, but the "full digital" transmissions would allow more power in the digital carriers, hopefully improving range and reliability of reception. In addition "full digital" will allow more than one programming source to be carried as "sub-channels", much like DTV.

Very cool. I wish I was in that area so I could hear the signals.

I have not heard of any plans for multi-channel stations on AM HD, even in this all-digital format. All-digital FM HD Radio should allow up to eight channels per station, though.

Years ago, I saw a paper from Ibiquity that showed a both a Primary as well as a Secondary channel in AM "full digital" mode. I believe the intent was to provide one high quality stereo channel for music and one lower quality channel for talk. I have heard that it is also possible to use the same bandwidth to transmit up to four lower quality "talk radio" channels... yippee!

Funny how they dont include the two channels the hiss wipes out
in the bandwidth. For those that dont use AM IBOC puts out
a loud hiss on both adjacent channels wiping them out. At nite
both WABC & WJR both ran it & killed each other. Same owners
so they stopped using it at nite. WBZ also has it but only days.
The ultimate goal is the same as with HDTV. Wipe out the old
system for profit. Hundreds of millions of radios useless & recycled.
Almost all car radios useless.......
If you dont think they would do it think again. We are getting things
a vast majority dont want shoved down our throat.
Thats it, BP going up fast.

Unlike the digital TV changeover, digital broadcast radio is neither mandatory nor scheduled to replace analog radio. If that ever happens, it will be because the market (audience) wants it.

Adjacent channels are never used in AM (or FM) broadcasting, in the same market area, so the wider sidebands are almost always a non-issue. (Except for the hobby of distant-station listening, which has nothing to do with the BUSINESS of broadcast radio, and is therefore irrelevant to the stations). That WABC/WJR situation is still the only case I have heard of, out of hundreds of AM HD Radio stations on the air, that was actually considered to be a problem by the station owners.

That would be interesting. I wonder if any of my HD Radio tuners can select subchannels on the AM band. Supposedly, some of the earliest HD tuners could not do so on the FM band. Thanks for the note.

Most if not all FM HD Radio stations here sound great in digital mode (within the limits of all broadcast radio sound). Much better than the analog versions in every case. Noise-free background, wider frequency response than analog FM broadcasts, and the convenient song title information on the display panels too.

(No, I am not in the HD Radio or broadcast business. I just really appreciate how well they work, especially on FM.)

I rather stay with analog .DTV sucks. We got forced in to it.Digital radio will suck too.

Soon if they make AM/FM band all digital .They probably shrink the bands down and auction off the extra channels to some bs wireless corp. I would not put it past them to do so.

Sorry to be cold on this topic.I'm not a fan of digital radio or Sirius/XM satellite radio.

Digital only say in my mp3 player ,Camcorder and computer.Anywhere else NOOOO......
