Can I power up my radio without the speakers connected
I have my Grundig 8058 on the bench and I need to power it up to measure voltages.
How do I safely power up the amp with the speakers not connected and NOT damage anything? Any knowledge shared would be put to good use. |

Use a 5 or 10 watt resistor with the same impedance as the speaker. The radio wont know the difference

If you keep the volume low you don't need a load.

Speaker connections
Here is a image of my speaker connections
Standard speaker connections are pretty self explanatory, but this setup... How would I connect 10 watt 5 ohm resistors to this socket? Last edited by omegaman; 01-15-2012 at 04:16 PM. |

Connect your resistor across the contacts that go to the woofer.

In the MUTE position the woofer is disconnected so apparently the company felt that no load was an acceptable condition. So I wouldn't worry about it.

That sounds logical

You can use the external speaker socket

I saw that but posted the resistor anyway!

The mute position does not actually remove the speaker from the circuit. It puts L31 in series with the speaker.
Looks to me that it would be okay to put the resistor across the terminals for the external speaker, keeping the volume low. Last edited by altbrewer; 02-01-2012 at 06:57 AM. Reason: Typo |

The MUTE button does not appear to function if it is supposed to cut of all sound
It is more like the LOUD button on more modern stuff, or the contour on Harman Kardon I just hooked an external speaker up I just powered it up, volume off, long enough to get a plate reading off of the EL95's 246vdc and the spec calls for 260 so good enough Last edited by omegaman; 02-05-2012 at 02:48 PM. |
