Old Belmont table radio from 1941

I went back to the lady that sold me the Crosley clock radio on sunday. She emailed me and asked if I want some speakers. I said I'd come get them, since she said I could have them. Some HUGE speakers with no name on them.

I was loading them into my truck and she came out and asked if I wanted an old radio, and handed me this. It was dirty, but after I wiped it down, it's half decent.

The power cord is a mess, and I doubt I would plug it in anyway. I will get a little more precise with cleaning it eventually.

Its a Belmont Coronado , Model C640 I believe. Or I've been told.

what would be a good solution for repairing the nicks in the finish?

What I do is take the electronics out and strip all the paint off with Citristrip. If the bakelite underneath is really nice looking (as it often is on sets I've done this with) I leave the bakelite bare and say it is now the bakelite color option. If the bakelite underneath looks bad then I get a can of lacquer based spray paint and repaint the cabinet and knobs. Sometimes if there is delicate grille work that is impossible to strip completely I'll paint just the grille and make it a 2-tone color scheme. Everything I've mentioned has come out excellent for me with patience and care...When I offer such radios for sale even at "I want to keep this" prices they usually sell fast.

BTW nice radio. I love the deco cabinet.

Wow, that Belmont is a keeper. Personally I'd leave that finish as is, it has a beautiful patina. And I hope you gave that nice lady a little hug.

She also gave me some old speakers. She asked if I wanted them before she took them to Goodwill. I took them. I thought they were just some old junk speakers. I had not seen the cabinet style before.

Turns out they are very nice vintage speakers. Knight KN-812 coax 3 way drivers in Karlson cabinets. After I cleaned them up, I put them in my den. They are truly wonderful speakers. I understand quite desirable in some circles. English made and seldom seen. The drivers look mint. Very musical, and without any colorization of the source.
