The D-VHS VCRs I know of (Panasonic, Mitsubishi, and JVC) all had IEEE1394 ("I-link", or "FireWire") connectors for their digital signal inputs. If you had one of the few HDTV tuners with the matching output connector, you could record HDTV on these VCRs.
