King of Jazz (1930) Criterion Release

I just picked up King of Jazz, a 1930 musical review from Universal, shot entirely in process three Technicolor (this is the final, most mature two-strip process, with the dye imbibition printing technique; process four was the full-color three-strip we all know and love).

This film has the first animation done in Technicolor, and while the musical numbers are typical late-20s and early-30s fare, which may or may not appeal to you, the film is most definitely eye candy. The restoration work is gorgeous, even the sequences that had to be sourced from a color 16mm print. The original release was 105 minutes, while this restoration runs about 98, so this is more than likely about as complete as the film is ever going to get. For segments where the soundtrack survives on disc, but no picture elements survived, a black and white still was inserted.

If you have any interest in the history of color photography, I highly recommend you pick this up from Criterion. They have outdone themselves once again.

Attached are a handful of screenshots:
