Bearings? Maybe cleaning and fresh lube will do it.

now it just rotates slowly , i guess it wouldn't hurt to open it , it did have a smell at one point so it may be just no good.

There is no such thing as no good. It might be not worth repairing but as you say, nothing to lose by opening it and seeing if it's just dirt or a bad bearing or a burned winding. All can be repaired and, in fact, there are people who do such things. Finding a new one may be difficult so be careful you don't damage what's left.

I have a Revox A77 I would like to sell if you want a nice machine.

I've got a TEAC X-3R (R is for auto reverse BTW), and a Realistic TR-3000 (might want to add that model to your search) IIRC that is basically a repackaged rebadged TEAC X-3. Audio Karma's database has service lit for all of them if I'm not mistaken. Also I think there is a capstan speed adjustment pot on these that might be worth tweaking.

My TEAC don't have sound half the time in reverse mode, and my Realistic (which is single direction BTW) has an issue where most of the time the servos don't want to respond to the play and fast wind buttons.
The Realistic also loves to throw it's belt which sucks because it is three times harder to get to it because of the way the Shack designed their custom cabinet.
These are GREAT machines when working, but they are not usually trouble free at this age.

i have the X-300R and it stoped playing properly in reverse years ago infact it was only a couple years or so old , the x-300 i've been talking about is my brothers , so if i spot a burned winding what can i do? is there somewhere that will rebuild them ?
i saw a couple people on ebay with motors but for what they are charging you could get a whole machine, so is there anything else i should look for ?

it is true they are great machines , the audio is great , they even play older pre-recorded tapes with less hiss then other machines produce when playing them.

Don't worry about it until you open it and see what you have. Another idea is a parts machine if you can find one.

The old high end R-R machines were very good. I still have my Ampex that, at age 60, is fine. It is definitely a boat anchor, all tubes.

News , the motor might not be bad the board that it goes to might be at fault ? tried the motor disconnected with voltage applied from a seperate source and it spins properly , no voltage on the board where the red and white wires run to the motor , it spins if hooked to a seperate 12 volt power supply , voltage on the transistor -the legs read different voltages , the 4 pin chip at fault ? signal transistors ? , maybe the relay ? any ideas?

i will try to find the schyematic wherever i put it.

motor has been taken apart and cleaned and greased , works ok when hooked to a seperate power supply , wont work when connected to the board , so tried a motor hooked to the teac board from a r/c car and it doesn't do what it should , voltage measurements on the board point to the relay area , no voltage after that , not refering to the big relay but the smaller ones , any idea where i can get replacements for these two little relays? mouser ?

If you can get the specks for the coil and contacts of the original, then I'd imagine an electrically compatible replacement should be obtainable.

I don't think those relays were special in any way. Subs are plentiful.

turns out the relays are ok , there is a 4.7 ohm resistor connected to one of the relays that was bad , once replaced everything is back in order , it was cooked and was reading thousands of ohms , it is a 1/2 watt , maybe they should have installed a 1 watt , so the problem is solved

thanks for the assistance
