Woo hoo! Just acquired a Atari 5200 complete in box!

I can't count how many of these I've had since the 80's but this one has to be about the best yet. Controllers work 100% and the box is near mint. I got 3 games with it. Pac man, missile command, and super breakout.

How long do you reckon the controllers will last?

If they're rebuilds, probably a long time. Otherwise, if they're still going after 35 years, then they're probably going to last awhile. They're real sensitive. Don't have to mash buttons.

Minutes?

I don't know what's up with these unless they we're gone through but they work better than any I've ever used. My very first pair back in the 80s was junk and my last pair wasn't that good. I've had some that we're decent. Rebuilt a few.

I've relegated the 5200 to the Bottom of my priority list... I'd much rather have a 7800.

That's too bad. The 7800 is my next target. I've had a few of them too but I always wore out the controllers on them. Dad ordered my first 7800 fro Finger hut. Brand new in the box with Pole Position II. The 7800s only problem was the repeat of old tired arcade titles like Ms. Pac Man, Centipede, Dig Dug, etc. That and poor, late marketing thanks to Jack Tramiel putting it off from 1984 until 1986.

Yep. The 7800 is just as powerful as a NES, but couldn't hang with it because of the Atari 2600 sound chips... Oh well. I bet the 7800 would have been successful if it were release in 82 instead of the 5200...

I'm sure it would have. Even if it had come out in 84.

Nice find. Now, you need to find a pair of the Wico 5200 joysticks. They were/are very nice, with mechanical levers to switch between spring-centering and variable-positioning mode. 5200 RealSports Baseball was a lot of fun with those sticks (and was also cool for having voice synthesis without an external box as the Intellivision used).

There were also adapters sold to allow using 2600-type joysticks with the 5200. They did work reasonably well, I remember.
