scope HV caps

Anyone have a source for .5uf 1.5kv caps used in older scopes that wont break the bank? These old scopes can be had typicaly from 25 to 50 dollars. The few caps I find far exeed that for the 5caps I need.

As you are discovering, "cheap" and "1500V" are kind of mutually exclusive in that capacitance range. The easily available "orange drops" only go up to .1uF at 1600V. Are the originals oil filled cans of some kind?

Perhaps HV caps scavenged from discarded microwave ovens might be usable? Probably a bit larger than 0.5uF, though...

Yes, oil filled. uf and volts wise that could work but a qty of 5 would be too large. Theres not enough room. Good suggestion though.

You might just double check the values of those caps.

More years ago than I care to admit, I was recapping a scope that had RMA banded caps and misplaced a decimal point in the voltage rating. It worked beautifully for about a week . . . . . then pop and smoke.

My working 5 inch scope uses two .05 Mfd 3K volt and one .1 Mfd 2K volt capacitor. My spare uses similar values. Both are from the 1950s.
