Zenith porthole dudes - help please
You Zenith Porthole dudes (CW Moser, Noisebox and whomever else wants to chime in). Bob and I are on the final glidepath (we hope!) of restoring the chassis on my Zenith Tennyson 24H21. We're wanting to replace the important resistors that we've read and heard about to prevent any problems. We've also heard these specific resistors are 100 ohms and are connected to the cathode side of the power tubes. If this isn't correct please help us with your expert guidance. Also, what wattage should these resistors be when we go to buy them?
Thank you! Steve and Bob |

Do not recall any wholesale replacement of resistors for this chassis.
What I did was spend a couple hours doing a wholsale Resistor check. I measured the Resistance of every resistor while still soldered in place. Then made a judgement call as to whether the Resistor was reasonable. Often other Resistors impact the read value. But, if the read resistance is much over, I know the resistor needs replacing. Most folks want the tolerance withing 20%. If the read resistance is way too low, I look at the Schematic. Sometimes the reason for the low resistance is another resistor or caused by a shorted capacitor. When I did my Resistor Check, I had my little helper helping me:-)

CW, Thanks for your input. I will let Bob see you answer and maybe we can do some checking of the resistors tomorrow when he's over. No, we haven't replaced or checked any resistors. Have just been concentrating on replacing all of the caps. I think we have one left to do. I'm also going to go back and pull up Noisebox's thread on his restoration since there was a lot of info there.
We've not been working on this chassis for a couple months and need a refresher. I want us to put in an additional fuse between some components to protect them from going up in smoke but I have to figure out where that will be. I also need to borrow or buy an inexpensive test CRT so we can use it instead of the 19in. It may be weak based on our sencore tests we did but I don't want to ruin it right off the bat. Steve |
