Our new Zenith... the good news and bad news.

Well we thought we wouldn't see it this weekend, but the sellers called late afternoon and we hooked up in Syracuse to get it!!

The good news is that it looks to be in nice untouched condition. There's a slight "cataract" ring but we don't know what constitutes bad or good. I'll post a picture of that shortly. So that's the good stuff.

The bad: it's a remote control model! which the seller conveniently didn't happen to mention, and which may or may not be desirable, but... we didn't get a remote! It looks like a knob in back at the top right does allow for manual tuning. It also looks like this model is VHF only.

Panicsville .... looking on eBay early model Zenith Space Command remotes are insanely expensive! Does anyone know which one we need?? Space Command seems to come in 300, 400, 500, 600... the number on the back of our CRT tube is 21FJP22. And on the metal chassis box is number 25MC33. That's about all we know! Help!!

You don't 'need' the remote to operate the set or any of its functions (Zenith was good about that).

Don't worry about the remote until you know the CRT is good on all guns. A new remote is $10-50 a new CRT is $150-300.

One of these is probably right. https://www.ebay.com/itm/ZENITH-SPAC...gAAOSwhplaUs4J

I can't recall seeing a Roundy with anything less than a 400. 600 sets have a motor on the back of the hue pot shaft, 400s don't. You don't need the remote to use the set. Be sure the set has its remote chassis (separate from the main chassis, tuner cluster, and convergence)...If it does not then it is either a Non-remote motorized tuning model or is missing its remote chassis.
Also Zenith remotes are ultrasonic there are no electronics in the hand unit, but rather tuning forks (really more like rods) that the buttons strike. Zenith liked to play with the order of the rods VS the buttons each model year so if the buttons are all working but labeled wrong then try opening it and swapping the rods around.

It would be a pre-July 1964 set based on the lack of UHF. The government mandated all sets have UHF in mid '64 before then it was optional equipment.

The Sams Photofact service manual (757-4) for your set was issued in June of 1965, so your set was likely a 1965 model. Ask for a copy in the classifieds. Many here have duplicates for very little (sometimes free) to save you from paying $22 directly from Sams.
