Canon XL1S as a video camera?

My daughter's fiance, a total non-techy, recently purchased an overpriced Canon XL1S on Amazon. All he really wanted as a video camera. So, does anyone know if this model provides live video at the 1394 firewire port without recording? I remember my Panasonic VHS AG160 (I think that was the model #) camcorder gave live composite output in the old days. He's in Chicago, so I don't have access to it, and I've been unsuccessful finding a user's manual. Thanks

Supposedly yes, the firewire port will stream live video when in Camera mode.

Also, how much did he pay? MiniDV stuff is getting cheap now that everyone's jumping on HD. I paid $350 for my Panasonic AG-DVX100B back in 2012.
