Zenith Space Phone Demonstrator

I purchased this 7 years ago to use with a set in my collection.. The set is long gone, and I still have this hanging around.. Time to let it go to someone that can use it.

I never tested it. Appears to be complete, and with the instructions and a spare board. Was told it was never used NOS from 1980.

Will sell for $75

What a great piece! I've never seen one of those before.

I used to have a Zenith console with the Space-Phone option. If I still had it, I'd buy the phone

Anyone interested in it for $40? I Forgot to mention it comes with the original box as well.

I will not ship it for that price though. Pickup only!

It was used by the dealer to demonstrate the Space Phone function on Zenith System 3 sets.

It looks like it was meant for calling Russia.

Wow, I never heard of the Space Phone feature before, and just read a bit about it on Wikipedia. Pretty interesting, at least to me, as a telephone collector. Was this feature very practical to use, and did it have good (or acceptable) performance? I know that not all speakerphones are designed equally, and some manufacturers ignore the importance to have proper separation between the speaker & microphone.

Not as good as current speakerphones, and annoying to friends of people who bought these sets and called up just to say "I'm talking to you through my TV!" For one thing, people tend to sit at 10 feet from their TVs, and closer for real dedicated speakerphones - so the room acoustics affected it in a big way.

I suspected that might have been the case. Was it more of a marketing feature than anything else?

I imagine this phone with it's transformer was made to "call" the tv, no dialing, as it was probably direct connect to the tv's phone jack. Remember back then calls were priced per call, not flat monthly line fee, and no charge local calls, think about the demo time the local dealer would have done on that tv. You lifted the handle, and the tv rang, then you puched the answer button on the tv remote, and you could talk the person on the red phone from the tv in store. My point is, I think this phone can't make real calls....? I bet it's just a demo phone to the tv. Have Catain M, have you tried it out? can it connect to Ma Bell or not??
