Did Sylvania also have a rectangular color tube in 1957??
I have the wonderful magazine "color television, 1957 edition" , which many here seem to regard as the "holy grail" of early color tv magazines. It is very informative, with many articles on 1957 model color sets. Most of the various companies selling color sets would bow out by the followng year--as we all know, due to the lack of col.or interest, till about 1961 or so, when the "revival of color" began--, nudged by Disneys "Wondeful world of color", for real that time, and forever.
One thing that caught my attention. ON page 14, top right, it shows a table model Sylvania set, model # 314T304 also listed in the guide on page 7 for sale at 595.00. This set seems to have a RECTANGULAR tube--but I had heard and read that only the Westinghouse set had a rect. tube, not very successfully either. Has ANYONE seen one--ever?? Also, on page 64, abnd also on the ETF site, it describes the GE 'POF tube, using "post accelleration" and a selecting grid , like the chromatron. What happened to that tube--did it also suffer from "aluminum sputtering" which supposedly plagued the Sony chromatron?? I have to be careful with this magazine, as it is old and I KNOW what can happen to vintage magazines from too much handling, and it was not that easy to come by. I know of a couple, owned by members here. Not sure if they are 57 or 58 models. One table set and one console. The console was listed originally for $100 on Craigslist a year or two ago. It sold for more than that but still went pretty reasonably for what it was. The table set has a bad crt but the tube in the console is good. It was my understanding that these may be the only two known to exsist at this time. They are certainly very rare but as far as I know, they are roundies.

Maybe you have an extra "4" in the model number? I think it is referring to model 31T304M. It uses a standard 21AXP22.

I have seen the posts about that roundie Sylvania set. That is NOT what I am talking about. The page sho9ws a set with a rectangular tube, and it says Sylvania. Did those ever make it to production?
I did get and extra 4 in the number--but that pix looks rectangular in the magazine to me, MUCH more than your set. Last edited by rca2000; 07-31-2013 at 09:17 PM. |

That looks like the Westinghouse set.

I'm going to guess that maybe the picture is an "Artist Concept" rather than a photo of an actual set?
It clearly has Lucy pasted on the screen and the edges don't look like they fit exactly. |

I restored a floor model, and there's another member with one that NEEDS to be restored hint hint! Tim has the Granada model, mine is the Saratoga.
Still with original 21AXP22, great emissions.

Here's a clear scan. The apparent "rounded rectangular" shape comes from the flat lighting of the bezel plus the rough job of pasting in Lucy's picture. For another thing they reversed the picture left-to-right so the set would face into the page.

In movie "The Girl Can't Help It" 1956 they have rectangular color TVs (impossible)
And show broadcast origin at airport using B&W camera! (even more impossible) |

For instance, what really irritates me is the show, "Flying Wild Alaska" often did show a Turbo Prop taking off with a piston engine sound or vice versa. |
