4.2 Volt mercury battery? Our portable/caddy RCA WR-508A used one - we strapped 4 D-cell sized NiCd batteries to the top and formed a 4.5V battery pack. Worked well, and only had to charge the batteries once a month. We could tell when the batteries got low - the crosshatch got wavy and wide.

The newer WR-508B had an accessory AC supply added.

Our bench WR-538 was strictly AC. I still have it too. We used it until we got the VA62...
