The first Blu-ray player model sold in the USA was the Samsung BD-P1000, in June 2006, with a $1,000.00 retail price. I bought mine for "only" $400 used in November 2006, the same day the Playstation 3 came out (with Blu-ray playing ability).

I am keeping that player in its box, as well as a Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player (the first one for that format). That one cost $500 new on April 15, 2006.

Being an early adopter of new technologies can cost a few bucks, but those early days of HD discs were an absolute blast to live through, and they were worth every penny.
