A major difference in electronics(in general) now than the past is that most of the critical functions are in integrated circuits(some containing millions of transistors). These are not repairable(but luckily-very reliable). The good thing about this is that modern electronic items can do many more functions than was done in the past. Try to build a VCR, personal computer or cell phone using vacuum tubes(or even individual transistors). There has been gain, even with the reduced serviceablity.
