What TV did is logical to me, whether a PM or real email. (Don't know about the particulars of cloaking the identity of the original sender, though.)
He wanted to answer cordially, instead of ignoring, in case it was from a real, active member. But he wanted to prevent them from having his real email address, which would be visible in an emailed reply.
If they contacted him by the email link, it would normally show their email, but that can be spoofed. It shouldn't show TV's real email unless he responds by email.
Being unable to respond by PM, but wanting to respond somehow, I think he chose wisely.
But Tom C. you are rightly curious about how a PM could be sent without "sender" info.
