If you have the sam's you could ohm out the replacement and see if it agrees with the sam's values. It is not a sure fire compatibility test, but it can justify a "smoke test" with the replacement wired in. Some early monochrome sets that sam's never published fly replacement numbers for have had compatible replacements found in this manner if I'm not mistaken.

Odds are the M designation has no relation to any horizontal differences, but I'm no Admiral guru.

I would imagine the replacement would be similar looking to the original. A comparison of the original, in terms of size and mounting, to the replacement might tell you something as well.
