What do you know about Romania?
 

I think I've put this question years ago. Maybe from then up untill now thing had changed about knowing of Romania.
Anyway, what do you know about the country where I live. Anyone went here? :)

Ages ago, I was inquiring about the language. It seemed similar to Italian or the Romance languages. It stands to reason as the country is named "Romania",per your information!
BTW, is Count Dracula from there and is Transylvania located there? :D

Even before I researched about, Romanian (language) reminds to me a mix of Italian and Eastern Europe languages, written with non-cyrillic characters. ...exactly that says Wikipedia:

Is more close to Latin than Portuguese (% of distance of Latin):
Sardinian: 8%
Italian: 12%
Spanish: 20%
Romanian: 23.5%
Occitan: 25%
Portuguese: 31%
French: 44%
Side note - then I'm correct when I said to my wife (she is Paraguayan) that Spanish is closer to Latin than Portuguese... ;) only by deduction...

I remember when Nicolae Ceausescu found himself on the wrong end of a firing squad back in the 1990s?, but I know nothing of the events leading up to his death.....

I know very little about your country and its history. Here in the USA, the schools do not teach very much of the history or the current details of many other countries, compared to the teaching in Europe or elsewhere.

The only countries that I did visit outside of the USA, until now, are Canada, the UK, Ireland, and Japan. Each of these visits was very enjoyable and educational in many ways. I hope to visit many more countries when I finish my working career, maybe soon.

I learned something about Romania that is not good. I was researching Odessa Ukraine after meeting a Ukrainian refugee girl. When Odessa was under Romanian control in 1941, there was a massacre of 100,000 Jews or so.

I think of Dracula first ! There have been several shows done there
and it looks like real nice country. If I were a traveler it would be
on my list along with other eastern block countries. I understand
Americans are more appriciated where the Reds ran things & it
could be hell for many.

I know that Romania uses the same vehicle number plate format as the UK (2 letters, 2 numbers, 3 letters) as some number plate recognition cameras have sent UK drivers speeding/red light tickets when they clocked a Romanian car & it's been in the papers about it. The only small difference is that UK plates have no gap between the 2 letters & 2 numbers i.e. my plate is FE17 UGZ, if it was Romanian it'd be FE 17 UGZ as there is a gap between the 2 letters & 2 numbers. I must admit that's about all I know. Oh yeah & I know they drive on the right, mind you most countries do, us in UK are are the odd ones out. Must have a visit one day...

I couldn't understand Japan copying the UK driving on the left side of the road! They copy a lot of US practices, TV and electrical systems, ETC. :scratch2:

Australia too. Have you ever seen the TV program Aussie Gold? They drive on the left and have right hand drive vehicles.
Once knew a British girl who really didn't drive much till she came to the US so switching over wasn't much of a problem for her. She said gas in the UK is considered a luxury.
Here in USA Georgia, you can get pretty much anything on a plate if you're willing to pay for it.

Japan, trough all not ever a British colony haves the driving on the left side of the road because they called on the British to built theyr roads and they choose the l.h.d. Canada was a British colony too and it have the driving on the right side of the road.
Anyway, driving on the left side of the road wasn't so uncommon as we think. Even in modern days. The former Austro-Hungarian empire had the driving on the left side. Forme Czehoslovakia had left driving up untill German occupation, Hungary up untill W.W. 2. Sweden, trough all not part of that empire, up until 1967.
As for colour television, I wonder if P.A.L. have had come around earlyer, not in 1967, Japan could have P.A.L. television?
Oh, Winston Churchill got behind the steering wheel in New York City and went on the left side of the road. :D

I've drove on the right in Germany, Spain & USA & found it no problem at all, they were all left hand drive cars. Weirdest was when I drove my Brother-in-laws left hand drive car here in England, that took some getting used to...
