ADMIRAL 14R12 run-8

Hi,
I'm just about finished repairing an Admiral 14R12 (run 8) set. It was given to me last year. The set has a replacement flyback and 14b/c/ep4 crt that was in it. I recapped all the electrolytic, paper, some mica. Replaced resistors as needed. I also had to replace the vertical output transformer and HV anode cap. I washed the cabinet with soap & water. Does anyone have experience with polishing/ waxing bakelite ? I was hoping to get the outside of the cabinet to look as shinny as the inside with out resorting to lacquer. Otherwise I will just leave it as is. Ed |

Just some more pictures. The chassis number is 20T1.

Looks like you have the Black Bakelite version? At any rate very nice! I think that Bakelite looks good enough to respond very well to Novus #2 polish. I really would not use anything coarser on it unless you have deep scratches you absolutely want to remove. But once you go to a coarser abrasive the overall luster on that finish will never be the same.

The set is black bakelite. My son thought it is brown but I showed him a brown version I'm just working on now. Is the Novus #2 just like pumice or rottenstone that I use for wood cabinets? |
Similar, but it's in a liquid form, which you wipe on, let dry to a haze, then rub out. They also make Novus 1 and 3, but the 2 seems to give the best all around results on Bakelite that's not too far gone. Your cabinet appears to still be pretty good with the exception of some light surface oxide and a few minor scratches, because it's still reflecting light very well in those photos.
