Picked up a Sony BDP-S1, first Bluray player sold in the U.S.

Purportedly the first according to Wiki, released to retailers in December of 2006 (wow, ten years already!) I remember seeing them in Best Buy back then for $1000, I got mine for $10 with the remote.

It's built like a tank as many first gen electronics are, brushed Aluminum top, blue Glass front, cooling fan and detachable PC type cord.

It works fine, just got finished watching Wreck It Ralph after first updating the Firmware, probably the only update it's ever had, was 3.8, latest (from 2012) is 6.1.

It's slow as molasses to load, like all first gen machines, takes two or three minutes but works smoothly once it's loaded.

Will I use it as a everyday machine, probably not, I have a couple cheap Panasonic's from 2010 that will load in a few seconds, but they are throw away junk as far as build quality, one is already starting to act weird at times.

Looks nice but I would have passed on it being what it is. My ps3 will play blu ray discs. I many movies do I have on blu ray? One. I'm not a fan of newer tech. Had a few flat screens and sold all of them. I'd rather put my money in vcr equipment and similar items. Half of what I get has been free too.

I can see the value in owning a first gen machine as a collectible. A large portion of the value of the CT-100 and the Westinghouse equivalent (that some forget beat RCA to market) is that they are the 'first' to exist. If 21" all glass CRT based color sets came to market first and they just happened to make the 15GP22 as a low price color set better than half the folks that care about them would not give a damn...

I like to collect recording formats and players, and got one U-matic deck and tapes....When I discovered it was the first model, Sony's flag-ship VO-1600 it became all the more special to me...Would I grab 5 more decks of that format?...Hell no (maybe one good one for a spare)!

If I found a BD player like that for cheap, I would buy it...Just because I know it will increase in value with time. And I actually do have enough gear to play BDs but no discs yet...

The first Blu-ray player model sold in the USA was the Samsung BD-P1000, in June 2006, with a $1,000.00 retail price. I bought mine for "only" $400 used in November 2006, the same day the Playstation 3 came out (with Blu-ray playing ability).

I am keeping that player in its box, as well as a Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player (the first one for that format). That one cost $500 new on April 15, 2006.

Being an early adopter of new technologies can cost a few bucks, but those early days of HD discs were an absolute blast to live through, and they were worth every penny.

That is a nice find, Eric.
