Recapping: extra fees?

So I was browsing Mcintosh gear the other day when I came across a listing that startled me, and not because of the price. The person selling the gear advertised replacement coupling capacitors, then in the same breath says lytic replacement isn't necessary. I sent a message, see the picture:

This is just asking for a shorted power transformer in the future, I have a Mcintosh MX-110 with so much lytic induced hum I can't even listen to it. Now I understand that not all capacitors are bad, but in my book they are bad till replaced when it comes to vintage equipment. When you take into account the cost of some pieces of audio gear you'd think replacement just on the basis of safety would be the standard, but I guess not.

So pay attention who you buy from, and if they recommend against lytic replacement be very sceptical indeed. My own MC240 had caps so bad the rubber came out the bottoms of them, between the terminal posts.

Tube amp? So the dude's an audiophile, or trying to sell to audiophiles. They always think everything's better off original.

Guys like that need to learn that Thunderface's use of the phrase "smoking hot rockaucity" has nothing to do with burning up their equipment.

This thread reminds me of a thread I started called "5y3 meltdown" . I can't repost the picture here because I already posted it there , but if you search it out it's an amazing thing , how red/orange the plates are and yet it's still pushing current till it's eventual destruction .

PS , that is no piece of equipment of mine , I saw that on an Ebay ad and thought it was , in a word , priceless . Especially because the lighting (melting destruction) of the tube was supposed to indicate working condition ; "Sure it works , see how good that tube there is lighting up ?" ... Yea right buddy , Not ....

I looked it up after your previous post, but that works quite well.

That must be one tough, not to mention seriously compromised tube to be visibly glowing in that lighting.

I don't own any tube McIntosh equipment, however, I have other equipment from the 1950s where the original FP style electrolytic capacitors work well and have low leakage. One example would be a pair of Electrohome mono amplifiers which I use for my computer sound system. The coupling caps were changed ages ago. The amplifiers are from 1953, and get used often. Both are well fused.

If you have something like a Sprague TO-6 to test the capacitors and they test good, and the owner wants it all original, I'd leave it alone.
