My New CTC-15

2 Attachment(s)
Sam decided he really didn't have room for the CTC-15 he picked up on CL a couple of weeks ago, so I arranged to go pick it up this morning.

The RCA Hi-Lite picture tube was installed in October 1970, and checks like new on my tester. I was able to clean up most of the cabinet finish issues that Sam talked about by using some GoJo and some 0000 steel wool, and doing a "wet-sand" clean up to get the cloth fibers out of the finish. I still need to do some more work to fix the corner where the original finish came off, but I'm pretty sure the cabinet won't need to be refinished. For a first-pass, I think the cabinet cleaned up pretty good.

Brought the set up on a variac and got audio and raster, so I hooked up a VCR to see what kind of a picture I would get. The horizontal and vertical hold are very touchy, and I'm not getting chroma, but it's a good start for an unrestored set. This one is definitely a keeper (just like all my other ones)

So now I'm the one looking for a control panel cover..........

I love RCA cabinets. Now if one could combine the handwired chassis of a Zenith with the elegant cabinet of an RCA that would be the ultimate round tube TV.

No color is probably related to the horizontal instability, makes phase sync really hit-and-miss because the burst can disappear.

Those higher end cabinet styles can be quite stunning! I hope you can find a cover plate for that too.

The thing I remember about new color consoles was the smell of wood, similar to new car smell.

Yeah, the cover plate might be hard to find, but I can come up with something temporarily. I've still got some more cabinet work to do, but that will have to wait until the weekend.

Same model I have, one of my favorite sets. I used to have a spare cover that was broken but might just be workable; not sure if it's still around here anymore.

The same model is on craigslist in Dallas.

Its missing the same cover. strange.

Actually, if you look closely, the one on CL does have the cover. The cover has holes to reveal the center of the controls.
