A customer actually brought this to me about a week ago. It was shipped:yikes: to him in a box barely big enough to fit the uncushioned TV. As you can see the neck of the original CRT took one good hit. The socket is shattered and pushed about a 1/4 inch in revealing the copper evacuation seal. The tube tests great and gives a picture. The VHF tuner shaft was damaged. I still have some vertical work to do. Original flyback that shows very little wax leakage and runs at 204 milliamperes. This set is from Memphis. I would have driven to get it if it were mine. More pictures soon!

Neat. Bet there aren't many roundies left in New Orleans.

Off topic - I was out your way today and noticed Phil's TV is now an urban barber shop :( That leaves you, Airline Park, Hymel's, McCann, and maybe Fogarty's - is he still doing house calls?

Zenith26kc20 09-08-2011 07:56 AM

I think Airline is still doing them. I do limited calls. McCann is very expensive and I don't think too many people use them for house calls.
That roundie came from Memphis. Mine came from Mark in Wisconsin.
The more roundies the better!

Here it is a few weeks later. It's repair ticket looks like Charles Manson's rap sheet. The CRT has held it's vacuum and it's 90% done. New tube sockets, 6GH8's, color crystal, some silver micas and a lot of labor!

Awesome. I can't wait to have my workshop set up again so I can start in on mine. :)

All I seem to do these days is CRT HD rear projection sets, so yes its’ a service call. If the customer is cool I will replace the STK chips in the home. Some people have a problem with you taking over the breakfast bar with bright lights and soldering equipment. Back in the 80’s I made a business case for doing CRTs’ in the home. It was cheaper to send one guy out twice in two days with than 2 guys twice for pickup and delivery. The customer was way impressed seeing their TV gutted lying face down only to have it rise from the dust with a perfect picture.

oh,do i remember swapping crts in home.i ve done more than a few.depending on the customer,it was quite fun.only had one who wasnt too pleased with the process.older woman,in her 70s.husband was mesmerized by the operation but his wife was very rude and nasty.after the set was done she did lighten up and actually tipped me.i loved those days
