1966 Conar black & white tv

Hi, I found this in front of a house down the street with a free sign on it. Being the hoard.....er.....collector that I am hee hee, I picked it up, brought it home and checked it out.

It is a tube tv with power transformer so no series string or hot chassis. A plus!

Anyway, it had two bad coupling caps, one shorted electrolytic in the power supply, and a burned up power resistor.

Had all the parts on hand and had it working within a couple of hours.

Anyone know this brand? Any schematics available?

Not knowing the history, I can only guess that it probably hasn't seen electricity for about 30 or 40 years.

The picture tube is in excellent condition and is not worn at all. In fact I needed to turn the brightness down just for these great pics.

Eye candy:

Conar was the "brand" for National Radio Institutes - it was a kit that the student built while completing one of their correspondence courses. Very good quality design, but in the end, it depended on how well the student could solder.

Rarity? I've never seen a Conar B/W set, only their test equipment and one color set...

Yeah the soldering quality in this thing is top notch. The flyback transformer tests great and shows no signs of over heating. I found that a lot of bolt screws that were used for grounding wires to the chassis were very loose so I went and tightened them all.

I might keep it. I would only watch it for about an hour a day just to keep the capacitors up to par.

Does it have a model number?

Just curious, I have an unbuilt Conar color TV kit and it has a model number 315 but I have never seen an advertisement for it or any other Conar kit TVs.

Used to see ads for NRI and their Conar sets in Electronics Illustrated and Popular Mechanics. Never saw one built or in person before. Cool!

Looks like a really clean set.
