5 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys,

Saw this RCA 21" blonde color set in LA (Dodgers Stadium area).

Beat-up cabinet needs full refinishing, rusty chassis, looks complete & CRT intact, see pictures.

20.00 bucks ends April 3rd.

Not my auction & no connection to seller.

Doug has one of those, his is a "Super" model as well. Too bad it's not a DeLuxe with the better speaker setup.

This is a really beat-up CTC-5, but it looks like the CRT is a 21AXP22A original. The seller's comment is "i wasnt even going to bother placeing this on ebay and just trash it but there might be someone out there thats interested". I am GLAD the seller listed it! Even only for parts, it is worth grabbing. Let's see, I can borrow my company's van at LAX...

I was out at Dodger Stadium yesterday for some event. Could have thrown that CTC-5 in my truck. Alas, no room at the inn for a large set like that.
I'm sure a local L.A. area collector can grab it.

Hope the tube's good...

It's actually a nice set that is on the scarce side. It's still in existence, complete and you can get this set working and the price is starting out right.

It is also the same model and finish that is in the Elvis Presley estate that RCA gave him in 1957! Somewhere I have the Parade magazine (Sunday paper insert) that has Elvis and his mother seated in front of it.

JB5pro 04-01-2011 09:30 AM

That is a great find! Imagine how close it came to the trash as many others will likely become as clearly there are still manypeople that can't imagine something being worth anything.

If only I was closer...

I WOULD try and get this!!

But..CA is OUT of the question for me!!

As it is....I am going to have to give up on that Zenith Emperor in Idaho, I CANNOT get it--andf can't get a ride for it. I will offer it up to someome here--and hopefully--someone will get it.

Probably because it was a train wreck- rusted chassis, damaged convergence assy, cabinet nearly beyond repair...it's a parts set at this point.

Not worth my while, there are much better sets to save.

RobtWB 04-04-2011 01:05 PM

pretty rough set - almost as rough as that 7b I gave to Sean - i wonder if he ever got anywhere with that old beast? wonder if the crt was any good in that 7b?

sean 04-04-2011 03:44 PM

I've still got it and the CRT did test good. I had planned to start on it over the holiday break at the end of last year but another project took longer than I expected. Maybe I will get to it this year.

Here is an update on this set. I took a real gamble bidding on it not knowing if the tube was good. I picked it up Saturday and it turns out that the CRT is very good on all three guns. The base is broken but the tube still works. Attached is a picture of it hooked up to the chassis from my good CTC-5. Obviously I did nothing to adjust the convergence as I didn't want to have to redo it when I put the chassis back in its cabinet.

I bought this for the CRT but I am probably going to restore the entire set. The chassis is not that bad and the sides of the cabinet with the fake grain cleaned up very nicely. I will replace the top and finish it and the front to match the sides. I will post a picture of it when it is done.

I'm so glad one of "Us" got it...Face it, fellas, we're kinda the Keepers Of Odd Knowlege...KOOKs, if you will...Kinda like the monks back in the Dark Ages..

miniman82 04-12-2011 09:14 PM

Whew, glad the jug was good! That's 2 good 21AXP22's found in 2 weeks including the one I got from Tom on ARF, so it looks like things are looking up!

ctc17 04-12-2011 09:23 PM

I placed a fairly high bid on that from my phone while half asleep. When I saw the pictures on the computer I kinda panicked and retracted the bid. Glad you got it, I have no room for anything else period.

I finally got the chassis recapped and restored. I put it partially together to see what I get. The picture is not that bad. I did only a rough static convergence and no purity alignment. In fact, the purity magnets around the screen are not even installed. Of course I have a way to go yet and I will not have time to do anything to the cabinet until after ETF.

Steve

ctc17 04-17-2011 08:13 PM

Did you replace the orange and red drop caps too or just electrolytic? >

Steve K 04-17-2011 08:16 PM

All the caps except for a few micas which I have on order.

Steve

miniman82 04-17-2011 09:37 PM

Looks like it'll have a nice picture once you get the purity assembly back in, it's got a little splotch in the upper left hand side.

I finally got around to finishing this set. I think that it turned out fairly nice considering what it looked like to start. Thanks to Bob Galanter and Steve Dichter for some of the missing and replacement parts. I still need a back and the safety glass so if anyone has these items and are willing to part with them please let me know.

The pictures are some before and after shots. I replaced the top and had to make a new board on which the chassis mounts and new boards on which the legs mount. The old ones were too rotted.

This set actually has a better picture than my deluxe CTC-5!

ceebee23 06-18-2011 07:07 PM

wow that shows you ..... fanatastic!!! another old girl rescued... congratulations!

Steve D. 06-18-2011 07:17 PM

Hey Steve,

Beautiful restoration. I can't believe that's the same "junker" we loaded into your truck last April. Matching the finish on the replacement top is remarkable. The picture tube was a real bonus w/that CTC-5. Nice shot from the U.S. Open telecast.

John Folsom 06-18-2011 07:29 PM

Very nice, Steve. That cabinet turned out great. Now you need to come to Florida and refinish my 21" Admiral faux finish blondie. :-)

Sandy G 06-18-2011 08:51 PM

Wow...Just "Wow !" (grin)

Eric H 06-18-2011 09:26 PM

Man, that is a really dramatic improvement! Nice picture too. :thmbsp:

ChrisW6ATV 06-18-2011 11:18 PM

Great work. That set looked like a parts donor to me at first, much better to see it working!

tvdude1 06-19-2011 10:37 AM

Looks good, what did you use for the top? My set has a bad top also.

Living in Los Angeles, sometimes, makes living in Caldwell, Id. look pretty nice. Lol.

LA is better for finding Tv's, Yes. I like living here. A lot less crowded. A LOT less traffic!! I bought a house in Buena Park in 1998 for $149K. Was a steal then. Sold it for 269K 4 years later. paid cash for a new one here in Idaho, no payments. I do miss the beaches and the warmer winters. :)

Glenz75 06-19-2011 07:40 PM

What an amazing transformation, you've put some real effort into this set, looks great
