Australian Ferris/Raytheon B&W set
 

I spotted this set at a local auction house today. It's the first Ferris TV set I've seen. I know the brand mainly for their car radios. Looking over the set I noticed a label on the back (that I didn't get a pic of, will do so next time I'm there) that it was licensed from Raytheon.

All the parts that I could see appeared to be locally made (at least those with branding on them). There's a 1960 date code on the yoke.

The audio output transformer appears to have been replaced, the HV cage cover is missing and the tuner is hanging down in the cabinet with missing valves (perhaps a tuner fault was the last problem that finally ended its useful life)

I've always associated Raytheon with military stuff and obscure computer. The only Raytheon stuff I've ever owned was some kind of interface converter. I've never seen a Raytheon TV or radio.

In the USA raytheon was a semi-big name in vacumm tubes, a small-medium player in the consumer TV/radio business (IIRC they got rid of that division around 1960), and also a player in the battery market.... I'm pretty sure they were out of the consumer arena by the time I came to exist.

Now I think they mainly build missiles, radar equip, and other defense hardware..

They had an interest in Amana and originated the home Microwave, known as the Radarange.
They bought into Belmont Radio Corp in the mid-40's.

That was a good buy.
It is a pretty set with a good condition.
Australia was a little back, the AW 53-80 (90°/ion trap) picture
tube was closeby only in ex-communist countries in use.
Closeby all western european countries switched over in 1959
to use 110° picture tubes, only.
The tuner is made by Philips!

I have a Raytheon forced air central heating system. It's all electric, 240volt, and must have been installed in 1974 when the place was built. So I would guess they did make things other than missiles, at least into the 1970's.
