Eric H 01-31-2007, 01:13 AM I thought it might be a good idea to put all the eBay sightings here in one place, they usually tend to get scattered all over the place and drop out of sight before the auction ends so a Sticky will take care of that problem.
This is the thread to post any B&W eBay TV auctions that might be of interest.
From the earliest Mechanical up to the Predicta would be OK, anything Color or later model could go in the appropriate Forum.
Eric H 01-31-2007, 01:16 AM I'll kick this off with this lovely Magnavox!

jpdylon 01-31-2007, 01:25 AM This thread was a great Idea Eric.
I prefer organization of auction finds, craigslist with a sticky like this rather than having to look around for them later.
wa2ise 01-31-2007, 03:27 PM As ebay auction web pages are transient, and the pictures uploaded to Audiokarma (usually!) last much longer, be sure to add model numbers (if known) to go with the pictures. After a while, this thread would accumulate a museum of sorts of pictures of old TV sets.
Tony V 02-01-2007, 12:26 AM I agree with Wa2ise in to post the link along with a pic and some interesting facts from the auction or listing for reference later when the link goes dead on whether its Ebay or CL. Usually by the time someone posts a link to a CL entry the item has been sold and is deleted so this would work out great in those cases. Since most of the pics are reduced in size for posting on Ebay or CL then they shouldn't bog down AK server space to much so we can enjoy them hopefully in the future. Maybe just post the best pic for each entry instead of multiples. Great idea Eric! I'm surprised none of us though about doing this sooner.

John Folsom 02-02-2007, 12:08 AM Here is a RCA 8-TR 29 table set with AM radio, in a blonde finish. Kinda rough, but you don't see many in blonde from this era. And the AM radio they squeezed in under the CRT is a good touch.
Eric H 02-02-2007, 08:47 PM Slight problem with the CRT and the chassis looks a little rusty.

I know someone who has I believe that exact model. it needs alot of work, including a dead CRT, some missing tubes and other work, but if your up for a project you could probably get it for a song. If your interested I'll ask him next time I see him and try to get some picture for you. He lives in chula vista, ca

Tubejunke 02-26-2007, 12:29 AM Wow! An old DuMont with a rectangular CRT. Most I have seen are round 19AP4 metal/glass tubes. Some round tubes are bordered to look rectangular. I wonder if this is the case here. As I always say these are the Dusenberg's of television. Superb quality but many, many caps to replace. Most seem to be in great condition. I attribute this to the fact that these were more or less rich folks sets at the time and were simply better kept through the years in good, dry storage. Probably an attic or a spare room in a large house.

Not if one of us in this forum gets a hold of it! :D
rld-tv01 03-11-2007, 07:07 PM Ref: Midwest TV and Radio in Ohio.
I emailed the seller. He said it is a 14 inch CRT and also that he would hold the set for pickup from a buyer driving to Ohio to the EFT convention in May. Mapquest shows Cincinatti to be about 115 miles from Columbus. Unfortunately its the wrong way from VA. I'm still thinking about it if the price doesn't go too high.

Tubejunke 03-19-2007, 11:52 PM Something is fishy about that ad. The guy is really vague about shipping. One person asked him about a price and he never gave evena roundabout figure. What he did give were dimensions and the wrong weight. He said approx. 60lb. The DuMont chassis probably weighs 60lbs alone, 20 of which is power transformer! The guy wants to make out good on something that will cost a fortune to ship. I hope someone near by wins the thing for $5 and picks it up. He may have to pay a helper to help lift it!! LOL
I didn't know the 19AP4's were that bad. I have heard of them losing vacuum but other than that nothing. The only one I ever owned did have a booster on it come to think of it..Lots of old TV's do though...

David Roper 04-04-2007, 06:29 PM The Westinghouse rectangular color set can be very difficult to distinguish from their black & white sets of the same model year, as they look almost alike. This is set was apparently not made the same time as the 22" color set and really looks nothing like it.
Dave A 04-04-2007, 11:36 PM The Westinghouse set can be seen here just past half-way down the page at Steve Dichter's wonderful site.
http://community-2.webtv.net/stevetek/StevesCT100/
Blonde set on tall legs. Same top control layout, but that is the end of the similarities.
Dave A
David Roper 04-04-2007, 11:48 PM Actually, I had a blonde Westinghouse console once upon a time whose top-mounted control layout was virtually identical to the one on the color set, which the ebay set really doesn't have. The color set in the picture Dave A refers to is a dead ringer for my set which was most definitely black & white. What I'm saying is: be very careful using comparison to the picture on Steve D's site to identify a set you think might be the rectangular color Westinghouse. While the ebay set doesn't closely resemble the color set, there are other b & w Westinghouse sets that are dead ringers for it.
Eric H 04-04-2007, 11:55 PM Well I just sent the seller a message asking for a model number and a pic of the back, we'll see what happens.
JohnAdams 04-05-2007, 12:53 PM The control know layout on the E-Bay set is different from Steves photo or from the photos of the chasis i have from the May 1957 PF Reporter article about the TV.

John Folsom 04-11-2007, 02:37 PM Need to send that '621 to Hugo Holden in Australia for a make-over!
http://www.earlytelevision.org/holden_621_cabinet.html
Phil Nelson 04-11-2007, 03:44 PM I hope somebody buys that 621 to restore, not just for parts.
The cabinet isn't half as bad as it looks at first glance. Not broken up, all the parts are there. Strip, smooth out some boo-boos, refinish, and you're good to go. The local auto glass shop can make you a new safety glass.
Same with the chassis. Rust can be removed. I don't see any important bits missing. (Isn't that part of the h-v cage sitting off to the side?) The CRT may be dead, but replacements can be found. Unless mice ate some unobtanium piece not shown in these photos, I don't see why it couldn't be brought back to life rather than parted out.

Tubejunke 04-12-2007, 01:25 AM I can't believe that 621-TS is up to $218.50, with 2 days left on the auction. This is PLUS $50 shipping and destruction. "One mans trash" if you will. I love old TVs and I've seen a lot of NICE stuff go for a whole lot less. I know 621's are desirable but personally I would rather leave a set with a rusty chassis, rhodent chewed capacitor cans, and a crt that is removed for some reason alone. Yeah, you can fix anything if you want to, or can afford it.
I must say that ion trap magnet was very interesting. An electromagnet I suppose.
Now that MIGHTY Dumont Eric found is my kind of ad. I think it is $20 with no bids so far. This set looks like it is on a showroom floor. For my money and taste I would rather have this one Dumont than 10 of that 621. Sure wish I lived near Michigan!! That beauty would be mine. A slow warm may produce a plug and play 50 year old set. If not this would be a fun restore...

jpdylon 05-06-2007, 10:48 AM That Stromberg is a rare one indeed. The only other instance I've witnessed of that model is another collector here in san diego who owns one. He's slowly rebuilding the chassis, and it was still working even after 50 something years. It is a very unique Chinese styling with a carved front.
If the fly, CRT, and power supply transformer are good, its definitely a set worth perusing at that price if the cabinet is in good condition.

Free Zenith, LA craigslist: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/zip/334768769.html
There's no picture in the ad, but my suspicion is that it's the same one that I saw on there earlier which was an early 60s space command b/w console.
Captain Video 05-26-2007, 08:12 PM About that Admiral box - I have some interest on it, but that model T1811 I couldn`t find listed in a book I have called "Most Often Needed 1953 Television Service Information" . I wanted to have a clue about the size of that model, by seeing which chassis it used. I have a 1953 Admiral, model 17DX12, that uses the 19B1 chassis, and I want to know if that box for the T1811 model suits my TV. Not that I really intend to use that box to transport my TV, but I think it would be very cool if I have an Admiral box of the same year that could suit my set.
Recently I bought another Admiral like mine on Ebay ( probably some of you guys will want to kill me for that! ) just to take some parts out of it, to put on my TV, including the back cover ( unfortunately this set also didn`t had the frontal plastic control door - oh well, maybe someday... ). Having that box would be a very nice addition.

Seems kinda surprising to me that it has remote control and a channel number window even though it's only a "Super"-line set.

Tubejunke 05-31-2007, 11:27 PM Here is a good shot at getting one of the best quality and most interesting sets ever made. Its a Dumont RA-109. Unfortunatly it used the dreaded 19AP4 metal/glass crt. This set looks like it has the original tube with NO brightener which is evidence of low use time.
If space is an issue you dont want this set. I gave mine away several years ago just so it would not be out in a shed doing time as a rhodent nest. Too big for my small house. These sets are wonderful and super interesting. Dual high and low voltage rectifiers and a probably 60lb. power transformer. Super high end for the day, 1948 or so.
You will need to take a truck and 3 or 4 healthy friends to pick this one up. Well maybe just one friend and a refrigerator dolly.....

I have one of those, and it is much better looking than in that picture. Personally, I have seen many that are really ugly, like many from the late 50's/early 60's.
bgadow 06-01-2007, 11:18 AM I have one of those Admirals, too. Yes, much better in person. Unique in that the top extends out further than the bottom. Mine needs refinishing; I have it mostly working though it has some sort of video issue as I recall. That was a popular series for Admiral-there is a matching radio/phono you could buy to go with it. Same chassis was used in the bakelite consoles.

If he could afford shipping from Brazil...there are tons of those 21 inch GEs here. I am somewhat amazed that I see that TV so easily here, and that he is finding it so difficult to find it in the USA.
wkand 06-25-2007, 01:32 PM The RCA set posted is from 1958 or 1959. We had one in the early 70's, given to us by a friend of my Dad's. It was a good set and served as my bedroom TV for a number of years, till the flyback melted. Ours was tan / gold trim as opposed to the burgundy / gold. It had a "roly-poly" quality to it, and several time it got knocked off its stand onto the floor. Tough little set!!!

Maybe cool to you but his ad state that it is a "VINTAGE 1940's TV SET". I questioned him on this and await a response. Reason being the set is obviously a 60's set. Very late 50's at best. It looks to me to have a rectangular crt. 60's. Still though if you think its cool and can avoid shipping costs by picking it up then go for it. I doubt you will have to bid battle on that one. Its worth the $24 if you like it. My opinion is that the vertical section seems to be the most troublesome in almost all old sets. It may be the output tube as the seller mentioned but of course that is the easiest and most logical fix for advertisment purposes. I seriously doubt he has any idea about the repair of the set. Getting the sweep back should not be much trouble if you have some TV repair experience. If you DON'T and want to get into the hobby, a set like this would be a good start.
Sandy G 07-01-2007, 07:26 AM Yeah, that Farnsworth is pretty neat, but $5k ? Uhh, I DON'T THINK SO !! Same thing on the working CT-100...Twelve-five seems just a tad too high, even for one of those. We'll see what it finally goes for. Betcha it won't make his $8K reserve.

I knew the set wasn't of that vintage, with a rectangular tube and a danish moderne cabinet. I happen to have a feeling that the seller doesnt know how old it is either, they rarely do. I've had good luck with zenith sets. They seem to be very well built. I have one of the metal cabinet "bugeye" sets and a late 50's console. Both came to life with a simple recap.
Tubejunke 07-03-2007, 01:03 AM I have heard a lot of the same opinion of the late 50's-mid 60's Zeniths being great sets and easy repairs. For me the ONE set I cant get working is my 59 Space Command. There is a thread or two by me on this set stumping me so I will not lay down the whole story other than to say, I brought it in with Hum for sound and no vertical sweep. I recapped and still have the SAME exact set. I now wonder if some older repair wasnt botched and something is just hooked up wrong. The set looks as if it was virtually NEVER used but I did find evidence of paper cap replacement in the vertical circuit. Almost all of the tubes are factory OEM and tested good. I think my next move will be going through everything with a schematic to look for components in the wrong spot and check all of those crazy Zenith connector strips for bad connections.
I wonder if a shorted vertical output transformer could cause hum in the sound.

John Folsom 07-03-2007, 06:58 PM Eric H,
I am a bit surprised it did not sell the first time around. Is it not cute? And how many round-screen tabletop TVs had doored cabinets?
I had bid on the Mercury, as it was only a couple miles from here and pickup would be easy, but the seller ended the auction 2 days early and cancelled my bid. I had assumed it was because he either wanted to raise the starting price or had sold it off of ebay, but it's been relisted at the same price, so I don't know what that was about. Oh well, here I go again ...
John Folsom 07-04-2007, 09:07 AM Hope you get it Adam!
Thanks, ... 4 days left, I hope it at least doesn't get cancelled again.

Tubejunke 07-09-2007, 12:46 AM Yes, that would be a 19AP4. No booster on the CRT which is a good sign, but easily removed. I LOVE old Dumonts and this one is only a few hours from me. What I dont like is the size and weight and the fact that I really dont have the room. I would consider losing a piece of furniture to have this set which is probably an easy restore, or may work as is with little work. These sets are tough as nails and this one was kept in a living room. It looks super clean and unmolested. Original owners probably would not have kept it around all these years if it was worn out and useless. Possibly though they got older and couldnt lift the ton of television. The RA-108 looks a bit smaller than the 109 I once owned. The weight and size was the reason I got rid of that one. And the cabinet veneer was rough.
Man! Will somebody come take this 1959 24" Zenith Space Command out of my kitchen so I can have room for this beast????
Also, I could swear there is a raster on this set but the seller says he cant get it to "light". Looks lit to me. Nice and bright which would be a good sign...
tracker-x 07-11-2007, 06:23 AM [QUOTE=fsjonsey;1223842]Really cool looking zenith Ambassador. QUOTE]
I'm the one who has that TV set- if you think you know what year it is, then you can argue that point with the 85 year old lady that owns it, who said she bought it in the late 1940's. Good luck with that- it would not be a mannerly, intelligent thing to do. I'm have not researched it, so I'm going by what the owner told me. I surely am not going to contradict some elderly person in their own home, and get in an argument with them, over the age of their old TV set. You need to look at the big picture once in a while. Don't sweat the little stuff so much.
On the tube replacement fix, her son runs an electronics repair shop at that location, behind their home, for the past 30 years now. I'm sure he knows what is wrong with the set- but he doesn't want to be bothered with it. If you want to debate that point with him, again- have at it- but I firmly believe his diagnosis will be correct- having watched him repair 4 vintage tape players for me in about 30 minutes one day- and he's done about 20+ repairs or more for me, in the past 6 months or so. The man is the most highly skilled electronics tech I have ever met in my life, and routinely diagnoses problems down to the component level- he's not a "board changer". I would bet money, he's more adept at repairing these things, than most- your comments are surely not appreciated as to him having "no idea". He's an EXPERT.
No need to jump to hasty conclusions ! Not everyone selling an old TV set is unknowledgeable, and there's no need to be so suspicious all the time. Esp. in this case, where the Ebay feedback, is stellar. What's the problem ?
Having said that, I put the set on the TV swap forum here. They actually have TWO sets, they have another old set with a metal frame, I believe that one is an RCA. They want to get rid of both. These people are getting up in age and just want to clean out their home.

Hey partner, you need to cool YOUR tude a little bit yourself. I don't need any DR Phil speach about my trying to lead someone in the right direction who asked for some opinions. Thats what WE do here. We help each other in all types of situations involving vintage electronics. It doesent mean that were always right. However when it comes to SLEAZEBay I think a lot of folks are a bit weary of grose misrepesentations of items if not complete rip offs. It doesent mean that anybody is making any DIRECT accusation pointed at you. Frankly though if you are going to sell an item then you put yourself in the line of scrutiny. So deal with it! Furthermore if you claim to have a 57 Chevy "Classic" and the actual item is a 77 Malibu "Classic" then people are going to see what is a fact. The item has been misrepresented in a way that will make it appear more attractive to the potentially, hopefully, unfortunately, ignorant bidder. It funny you seldom see misreps that down sell an item. You don't see that 57 Chevy being called an 87 Cavalier with a BUY IT NOW of $500. I wonder why it works that way...
I personally can not accept lack of research as an excuse for not knowing what DECADE a 20th century item is from at least to a certain degree. Especially with the idea that you are internet literate (if you will) in mind. It wouldnt take a lot of research. Really all this is a stupid waste of time and still all matters of opinion. I have every right to advise someone to be careful with anything that is NOT what it is said to be. If you are interested in what we are here for, then welcome aboard. If you came here to sell that is OK too but if you make a mistake in identifying your product please don't fall apart if someone remarks on it TO SOMEBODY ELSE.
Sorry to steam you as I did make some skeptical remarks. It may have all been different if your ad said OLD CLASSIC TELEVISION FOR SALE or something similar.

Tubejunke 08-06-2007, 02:16 AM Not worth a fortune but probably would be easy to repair and VERY reliable. Sets like this that old folks have hung on to are usually very well taken care of and were only put to the side when they eventually upgraded to color. So the set was probably working fine when stored away and often will come back to life with very little trouble. It would be nice to see someone give this handsome set a good home. They don't make em like that anymore.....

Description:
Wow nothing like taking a leap back in time. It is amazing how far televisions have come!!! This is a nice vintage piece of history. It is a 1953 Zenith Television set in a metal/wood console.
When I first brought it home this week....I plugged it in...it powered up and I got sound AND picture. The next day when I turned it on to show a friend, all I can seem to get is the lighted screen. I cannot see picture or sound. So....don't know what that means. I'm too chicken to wiggle anything in the back of the TV as I don't know what I'd damage if I did try. I did not hook up an Antenna so that may be why there was no picture. I am not sure. This TV appears to have NEVER left the Denver area. There is a sticker on the back from the original Denver store that sold it. The first 7 pictures are all of the TV.
The Turntable and stereo I don't know anything about either. The power cord in the pack is damaged too much to try to plug into an outlet. So...don't know if this would work or not if it was repaired. Last 4 pictures are of the Stereo. Sticker on the inside says it is from Wards. This unit looks like it is in pretty rough shape....maybe all it's good for are parts. You decide.
This is for local pick-up only. I live near Simms and Quincy or Littleton.
There is NO reserve, so highest bidder will win this auction.

Man, I have often wondered where all of those old testers went. Seems like they used to be in every drug store you went in. I don't know what the connection between tubes and drugs is but thats where I remember them. As kids we liked playing with all of the switches. When I got a little older I got to carry bags of tubes to the store for the free test. They kept the stock locked in the bottom. To this day I need a tester capable of testing ALL types of radio and TV tubes. I have two now and can test most tubes but there on my older set up there is a socket but no settings for the old 1930's 78, 80, ect..My later Hickok does not have that socket but DOES have the sockets for the later Compactrons which I seldom fool with. This old industrial job probably will test anything. Its just too big for my small space on Earth....

Tubejunke 08-19-2007, 01:04 AM That last one looks like a possible "plug and play". Thats a phenomenon I have discovered in collecting old tv's. Once in a while you find that set that was well taken care of and above all more than likely never left dormant for so many years that the capacitors didnt get too far out of whack! You get it home and do a "slow warm" with your 100 watt light bulb rig and the old thing fires right up.
Dormancy factor is a key factor I believe. My two best working originals I have owned since the early 80's. One at least I know that a fellow then in his 60's kept and used regularly until my purchase. Thats the Sparton. The other I'm not sure of previous owners but I do know that it was used regularly enough to earn it a crt booster. This is my 56 Philco that I used regularly as a teenager. $10 and working in 1983 and working ever since. So both sets up to this day have never gone with zero use, only ocasional use. By now the Phico's poor veteran 21ZP4B is getting a little dim but still well watchable after several minutes of play.
I firmly believe that the occasional use is the key, like vitamins and exercise to the human body. Really if you think about it a lot of stuff works like that. What about cars? Let one sit, next thing you know it is a clunker.

Now that is a neat set.
Looks like an RCA 630 chassis in a private label cabinet?
Whatever, it's a good deal for $50!

The price of the RCA is a complete absurd...

Tubejunke 08-28-2007, 01:27 AM That Ansley is UGLY but very interesting. Anyone ever heard of Ansley? Not I.
To me the set looks very commercial/industrial if you will, almost military. Certainly not the more typical furniture look of console sets. I wonder if thats one of those sets designed for a hospital or motel room...
bgadow 08-28-2007, 11:29 AM I have an Ansley radio, a small chairside with built in phonograph, prewar. I have seen another Ansley from the same era. They were built in NJ and seem to be reasonably well made.

Huge Curtis Mathes combo, it says 1952, but it's more like 1962. It's in good condition though, there's even a picture of it working.

John Folsom 09-04-2007, 08:53 PM Might even be 1972.... no one was making rectangular CRTs in 1962.
Captain Video 09-04-2007, 09:37 PM I am not sure about that. To the best of my knowledge, truly rectangular CRTs started to come off the assembly lines in 1960.
Dave A 09-04-2007, 09:43 PM Hallicrafters for $6000!. About $300 for the set and $5700 for the stand.

John Folsom 09-04-2007, 10:03 PM Captian Video, I stand corrected! Dave A, it IS a very nice stand :-).
Eric H 09-04-2007, 11:02 PM Hmmph. generic stand, wrong knobs, I wouldn't go any higher than $4,000
This must be a joke, he's got other vintage 'lectronics for sale at normal prices?

Obviously not in WORKING condition for that price...
That model Curtis Mathes combo on ebay is in my Curtis Mathes brochure 1962: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showpost.php?p=585268&postcount=7
It's the middle picture on the bottom, "The Fountainbleau".
Interesting older b/w set on craigslist, not sure what it is but I like the cabinet: http://seattle.craigslist.org/oly/clt/411593925.html
veg-o-matic 09-05-2007, 09:02 AM That C/M is "color convertible"? Does that mean they could substitute a color chassis for the monochrome?

It sure looks like a Sentinel to me, and if so, woe unto anybody who takes pity on it: if those holes have no shafts protruding it's because there's a chassis missing.
http://tvontheporch.com/images/sentback_187x250.jpg
There's a picture of the back showing the chassis, the chassis does look similar to that Sentinel, but if it's the same model it does appear to be missing that 2nd chassis that's mounted upsidedown.
