View Full Version : New projects: Bush TV22 and Philips TX500
yagosaga 01-07-2007, 05:28 PM Hello,
on christmas day, a friend of mine, tv collector, visited me and donated a tv set wrack to me. I took it first and thought that I would exchange it for other tv spare parts. It is a Dutch Philips TX500 with a broken crt:

But later I realized that this is one of the first 625 line tv sets and I decided to keep and restore it. Meanwhile I have got a new crt with god emission and a missing four channel tuner for it.
Another tv set I got in the last year was a British one, Bush TV22. The bakelite housing is in mint condition but the chassis looks bad:

The crt is absolutely bad, with no emission (measured with a crt meter).
Today I have fired up the set and I got a small raster. It was only visible in an absolutely darken room:

The crt is a MW22-16. Does somebody know whether I can replace the crt with an American tube, perhaps a 12" crt?

I searched for "bush tv22" on Google and found several references. Perhaps one of the people operating those websites knows the answer to your question.
The 405 Alive website has a lot of information about 405-line British television:

Before some months, I have already asked here for a crt substitute, but without a convincing result:

I will try to restore the set first and then will see, what I can do with the crt.

Sandy G 01-08-2007, 04:27 PM Nice sets, Eckhard.
Captain Video 01-08-2007, 04:55 PM There are some websites of British TV set collectors. Maybe if you contact some of these collectors, one of them may have the CRT you need, or know someone in Great Britain who rebuilds those CRTs.
yagosaga 02-13-2007, 03:27 PM Meanwhile I have got a spare crt from the Netherlands with good emission. I have replaced the old crt. With the support of Darius (oldeurope) I got the set in working condition:

The lowe set looks like a small building. That is wild that they made a set like that. How Neat. Is it a rare set? How many did they make?

Hi roundscreen, the Loewe FE B was the third set made by Loewe and was produced in 1935 and 1936. I estimate that a few hundred of these sets were made for the television reports of the Olympic games in Berlin 1936. A characteristic of this set are the special tubes made by Loewe with double and triple triods similar to your compactrons. Another characteristic was the chassis: circuits are placed on modules which could easily replaced by new modules in case of failure or misfunctioning. As far as I know only one set of these survived in Germany. I don't know how many sets exist elsewhere in the world.

Loewe was one smart dude. Way ahead of his time. Compactrons and modules in 1936. Is there a picture of the chassis on your site?
BTW-The picture on your bush tv22 is bright and clear. Great job.

yagosaga 02-14-2007, 03:45 PM Ed: I have made the photos of the four prewar sets in the technology museum in our capital. I had not the possibility to open the sets and to take photos from the insight. But in case of the Loewe set I have found some photos from the chassis, the tubes and the modules in a book about early television. I will create a web page about this set soon and will post the link here.
Perhaps Steve McVoy knows someone who owns such a set?

Ed: I have created a first draft. See
http://bs.cyty.com/menschen/e-etzold/archiv/TV/bush/tv22.htm
It is written in English because it is easier for me to write it first in English and then to translate it into German than vice versa.
Note that this is a draft. If you have improvements or corrections please send me a private email.
If there is enough interest, I would take oscillograms from the critical circuits and place them on the page.

sorry, I did a mix-up of the web pages. The web page about the Loewe prewar set will follow - in English too. Stay tuned.

The bush tv is vary interesting. One picture you took I could see the scan lines and The picture of blue glow of the ho tubes is cool too.
I made an attempt at putting up a web site about vintage tv and it looked like a freek show so I don't think I am in a position to correct anyone.
Yours looks perfect to me.
