Looks like a special model to me.
#9733799654.
It looks like the neatest cabinet on one of those I have seen. However, I have not seen many.

The $129 BIN price is a good deal for this set!
Thankfully it's too far away for me to consider.

WOW; That was a steal! That is the most valuable of any of the Halolights, except for the same one in blonde. I think those were in the $500 range even 20 years ago.

damn! I had one of those exact model sets. Mine had legs on the bottom. The only unfortunate thing was the halolight was near dead. i sold it to a member here, but I never thought they were worth that price.

what is the halo light feature ?
The white area surrounding the picture is back-lit. Supposed to be easier on the eyes than just a TV picture in a dark room.

This version of the Halolight is my favorite. I have restored 4 of them - including the one that I got from AK member Jordan Pier. Two of them are 21 inch and 2 are 23 inch. These were called Sylouette because of deep they were. All have similar halolights that come out from the cabinet - kind of 3D. Other than screen size, the cabinets are very similar - one exception being that the controls could be behind a smaller door on top or the entire top of the tv slides back to reveal the controls. The ad below shows the earliest Sylouette.

About 15 years ago, a book called "Mid Century Modern" showed one of these Halolights - it is very popular to 50's memorabilia collectors because of the odd cabinet.

Jordan - the Halo on the set that I got from you does work. If these have been sitting for long periods or if they are cold, it takes a while for the halo to kick in. Until it warms up, it flickers like a flourescent light.

very cool. Nice to see someone has literature on these. I'm glad you were able to find it a good home Gary.

Very nice e-bay offering. I like the slim profile. Sylvania certainly got a lot of milege out of the Halolight feature. I didn't realize they produced sets with Halolight this late in the game.

There is another halolight on Ebay. This set would be from around 1960 according to the SAMS. My Grandparents have a halolight B/w combo from around 1964.

Here is the Halolight that I just restored. I got this off of ebay about 8 years ago. This is the set that is pictured in the advertisement that I posted this afternoon - from 1957.

What sort of light is used for the Halolight?

We have a new Philips LCD TV with backlights. Little lights on each side of the back shine onto the wall. You can set the color temperature of the lights, or let them vary in color/brightness as the program content changes (which I find too distracting).

Having some ambient light does make the TV more watchable in a dark room. I wonder why more TVs haven't provided this in some fashion.

A good neon sign shop can replace the electrodes, evacuate and regas a halolight tube. It has been a neon tube in all of the Sylvania halolight sets I've encountered. There was a shop here in Syracuse that was able to do this for me back in the 1970's. Cost was around 20 dollars, so it would probably be more now. Unfortunately , they went out of business some time ago.

If you're so inclined to pursue this avenue, be EXTREMELY carefull with the tube as it isn't very robust. And it will cost more to do.

I've wondered if it were possible for the same type of shop to rebuild a Victoreen high voltage regulator tube.

Thoughts?
