A couple I might add would be "Dr. Strangelove" (1964) Sellers pre-"Panther". Another one is "Freebie and the Bean" (1972) James Caan & Alan Arkin 2 Frisco cops-one staid (Arkin) & the other crazy (Caan) do battle w/the bad guys. "Blazing Saddles" (1974) OK, this is 3..So sue me...Still funny. Another Mel Brooks film that I about pee my pants over is "The Producers" (1968). A bit dated, but still hirallious. "Carmen Ghia"- Omigawd !!

Another..."It's a Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad,Mad World" (1963) OK, how could a movie w/virtually every comic in the business back then appear in it & NOT be funny ?One of the best scenes-the redoubtable Ethel Merman slipping & landing square on her redoubtable keester near the end of the flick...A bit slow at times, when it's finished, you're TIRED. A classic.

Thread sent me on a semi-annual hunt to see if one of the funniest (and most unobtainable) movies ever was any more available, or affordable, if available, and lo & be damned- finally in June, it is being released on DVD:

The Loved One

Can't farking wait.

Has anyone but me seen "The Terror of Tiny Town"?

Comes on sometimes on the really late show. It is not one of the best Comedies but it is definitely unique.

Ok. It was a TV show....but it made fun of BAD movies and the show positively ROCKED! :thmbsp:

I miss it. I sure wish a cable channel would pick it up for repeats.

Another one was "Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines", if you happen to love VERY old airplanes, as I do. If you've happened to have recently taken a substance which is surely illegal, & kinda bends reality, one to see is "The 7 Faces of Dr Lao" (1964) starring Tony Randall, & a pre-"Jeannie" Barbara Eden. That movie is mind-bending enuff straight, I can only imagine what it would be like f!cked-up...

Can't believe no one has mentioned "The Odd Couple" yet. "Little Big Man" and "Tootsie" also deserve mention. One of my college buddies laughed so hard at "Tootsie" that he pulled a muscle in his neck. Walked around for a week with his head cocked to one side.

My vote for the absolute funniest movie of all time goes to "Young Frankenstein."

Great stuff so far guys. Keep it coming.

I'm not a big comedy afficionado, but I've seen several mentions (and rightfully so) for "Dr. Strangelove"

Another Peter Sellers gem is "The Party"

Other films I love - the original "National Lampoon Vacation", "Airplane" and "The Naked Gun".

To me, all 5 of the aforementioned films are sidesplittingly funny.

Laurel and Hardy Christmas Tree Salesmen. Hands-down sidesplitting funniest "escalation" movie ever, ever,ever,ever,ever...even if it's less than a half-hour long.
I've replayed it so many times over the years, I don't know or care how long it is.

I prefer the classics so here's a list: (I'll stick with talking films. There are many silents which belong on any decent list of the best of all time.)

1. It Happened One Night (1934) possibly the greatest comedy ever made.
2. She Done Him Wrong (1933) starring the redoubtable Mae West at the peak of her considerable comedic powers.
3. Bringing Up Baby (1936) starring Kate Hepburn and Cary Grant. Along with the following film, Screwball at its absolute best.
4. My Man Godfrey (1936) starring Carole Lombard and William Powell.
5. After the Thin Man (1936) starring William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles.
6. The Great Dictator (1940) proved, as if there was any doubt, the genius and sheer talent of Charlie Chaplin.
7. A Night at the Opera (1935) arguably the Marx Bros. greatest film. Was there a greater comic foil than the magnificent Margaret Dumont or a funnier scene than the "Stateroom" scene?
8. Easter Parade (1948) Fred Astaire didn't want to make this film but aren't we all glad he changed his mind? Costars Judy Garland and Ann Miller are fabulous. Contains two of the top musical numbers in Hollywood history - the "A Couple of Swells" duet with Fred and Judy and Miller's "Shakin' the Blues Away." Wow! Plus, it's funny.
9. Young Frankenstein (1975) Even funnier than "Blazing Saddles" and an absolute dead-on spoof, lovingly lampooning the 30s "Universal" monster films. Mel Brooks at his best.
10.Love and Death (1973) was Woody Allen at his zaniest. This is very funny stuff but deeply observant. Nobody, not even WC Fields, Groucho, Mae West, or Mel Brooks, could skewer the pompous with any greater skill than could Woody. Bravo.
