Anyone have any info about an RCA portable, model # 14-S-7070U,
picture tube number ? Would this be a good one to repair?

Thanks,

This set's challenging for a newcomer-hard to get to components!

Jerry:

As 50s portables go, that is definitely one of the better ones. The "U" designates UHF, somewhat rare for the period. It is well designed and constructed using a power transformer and 5U4, so the chassis is isolated from the power line. It uses a 14RP4 CRT. That's a 90 degree electrostatic focus tube. It also has a solid retrace blanking circuit and a good RCA tuner.

The 90 degree tube and power transformer will make the TV somewhat heavier than many other 14" portables of the era.

It is relatively easy to work on, particularly when compared to the later 50s RCA portables. If not already done, it will need a few paper caps replaced in the vertical and sync circuits and some tubes in the signal processing circuits. When working properly it will provide a sharp steady picture and clear, buzz-free sound. Make sure knobs and trim pieces are intact. I would not be afraid of this one.

I would agree with Don on this one, these are nice sets.
I have two of the 7070G model, I recapped one and it has a bright, sharp picture.

The other has a bad CRT and can be a parts donor if needed.

Phil's Old Radios has an article on restoring one of these if you want to get an idea what you'd be getting into.

Eric, do you have an extra handle for the top of the TV?
Thanks,

No Jerry,
Every one I've ever seen was missing the handle or it was so rotted it was ready to fall off. They were made of leather or rubber nad they just didn't hold up.

Somewhere I saved a picture of one so I would know what it's supposed to look like.

Looks as if I got it :  - the seller e-mailed me and said the winner can't afford to pay the postage. I'll have to pick it up in Peoria, about 90 miles from here. Anyone have a schematic they can e-mail me?

Merry Christmas !!
