Sylvania RXC178WA05 - notched luma + combed chroma? Why'd they do that, I wonder?

What meant Xtended life at the early '80's "R.C.A." color sets?

Reduced color crawlies on the ref's shirt. But the luma notched at 3.58 to avoid hanging dots. Not great but it was a step above traditional notch bandpass and band stop of older color TVS, back in 1979 or so.

I think the "XL" in RCAs color TV line was more to suggest a general feeling of "excellent" rather than "extended life".

Some Sony TVs have a switchable notch filter. It does remove the dots, but also takes out a lot of picture detail.
