Damn! In three years living in Phoenix, and hitting second hand stores, I never saw a single roundie... I think just one tube-era set ('67 Maganvox) the whole time I was there. That place was death for cool electronics :worried: (just the opposite for cars  )

If I were there, I'd be on that like a fly on stink.

Identical to the set I grew up with but for the fact that my folks' set wasn't a roundie. Well, the cabinet wasn't exactly the same, but close. Decent performer (when it wasn't on the fritz) as long is it was fed by an antenna. The tuner in these was problematic; sensitivity was poorer in upper VHF channels, plus for some reason it's totally unsuitable to cable TV. Almost every channel on cable would have herringbones running through that no adjustment of the fine tuning would entirely eliminate.

This is my first post after a week or so of perusing this forum. My set is a set with the same design cabinet and color; mine is a RCA CTC-10 that was the lobby set at the TV station I worked at for 30 years in Tampa; according to the engineer I got the set from it was the loby set from 1960 to about 1970, then they changed to a rectangular tube set. I replaced the pcicture tube myself right after getting the set in about 1988 or so. So the tube only has about 5 hours on it--i turned the set on very sporadically and the picture was absolutley outstanding. it's presently in my garage because of a recent move, so hasn't been on in almost 2 years. last time I turned it on i had lost vertical output--just the infamous white line; so will have to work on that soon hopefully; I was just amazed that even though the brand is different, the cabinet is almost identical; the 10 is probably older though. ALso have a CTC-5 that I've never even attempted to delve into and have no idea what the condition is in electronically. It was obtained about the same time from a TV shop in south Tampa. it's the Aldrich Special from 1956. I may put that on Ebay, not sure yet. Just wanted to get a post in. have pictures of both sets just haven't looked into how to post photos here yet.

That small hole near the bottom of the speaker area makes me think it is likely a remote control set.

This is the back of the set, any idea of what this is,

It is. Ultrasonic remote.

Is that bare spot to the left of the chassis where the remote chassis is supposed to go?

What are all those rows of peg-looking things between all the tubes on the chassis? Test points?

I think those are terminal strips. Motorola and Zenith used them, too. I think you stuff all the components into the strips from the back, then bathe the strips in solder from the front. This is how some companies made point-to-point wired sets during the pc board era.

This one must be partly hand-soldered though, because there do not seem to be terminals like this on the tube sockets.

I'll bet this chassis really is a Packard-Bell design.

I've been wondering: did Packard Bell distribute nationwide, or just how far did they sell sets? I understand they were California built. I have 2 P-B radios, one is an AA5 I picked up in Kentucky. The other is a big portable radio/phono/recorder from the late 40s, with all west coast stations listed on the dial glass. Could have easily rode back east with somebody. I've never seen a P-B tv set around here, though oddly I have up in the attic a used 25" color picture tube branded Packard-Bell.

I would sure have guessed this to have an RCA clone chassis but that thing looks like nothing else I can think of from that era. How does this compare to the famous NOS Packard-Bell, or to the later 60s stuff? I'm just curious if they later switched to pc boards or if they stayed hand-wired to the end in the early 70s.

(theres a challenge: find a Teledyne Packard Bell. Stick it next to your '69 Westinghouse color console)

Avalon1308, I have a Packard Bell chassis identical to or very close to the one in your set. It was salvaged from a set that had heavy water damage to the case. If you need parts, just let me know.
