This is kind of a stupid post, and would be better if I had a DVD on pause for a more accurate comparison, but I did a screen shot of 3 different brands of sets. Let's say it's "back in the day" and you were shopping for a used set with the best detail and accurate color picture. Which would you choose.... A, B or C. Also.. see if you can guess the brand you chose.

It's pretty hard to go by just the pictures, because what the camera sees can be quite different from what we see.

To me, B looks to be the brightest but that's not the be all end all.

I hear ya on the camera. All have pretty good pictures, but it would have been more accurate had I done a paused screen shot. As for clues to the brand(s) A is a 2000 BPC, that every old person must have purchased, and it seems you can't kill them. (I purchased this set new) B) Is an early 80's set, that you never see anymore. I think they rivaled tube RCA's for eating flybacks. C) If that one seems the sharpest to you, it should... it uses a unique picture tube, that rivaled all others. This model is a 1980 set.

You could have had three pictures of the same model, or even the same TV just adjusted differently, and no one here could really tell which had the better overall picture. Just like in the TV stores when they were new, the sets were rarely adjusted to the same color, brightness, contrast, tint, etc.

"Better" of course is highly subjective, but for the sake of argument, I like number 3 the best. No doubt that I would pay a premium for that brand, and likely did back in the day.

Well, C is probably the sharpest. as it's most likely your Zenith set that uses the tri-focus CRT. Also uses the 9-160 board, which if I'm right, is the one I replaced the main filter capacitor in. Not sure which ones are the other 2. And I'm probably wrong. Hard to tell from pictures.

When the big box stores had a set on sale, they generally had that set poorly adjusted, so the prospective buyer would look at a higher priced model.
The old "Bait and Switch". :thumbsdn:

back in the day,i saw several sales associates adjust house brand sets to have brighter, sharper pictures.sun tv was the main distributor of sylvania.always had the best picture.the other brands, admiral, low leverl rca.an occasional zenith were always dim and out of focus.sylvanias did have excellent picture without the trickery.i watched these people do this when there was a big sale on the house brand

back in the day in our shop, we adjusted each set for the best picture. There WERE some sets new out of the box, that either looked better than others, or worse. (no matter how you adjusted them) One thing we did NOT do.... We carried secondary brands off and on, and they got their own place in the shop. Whatever brand it was.. the Zenith CC2 made them look bad. They looked fine on their own, but on a side by side test.... Zenith always won. (even against the beloved Sylvania with that dark face tube that never held up) As for the brands I showed....
A) 2000 RCA BPC with a slightly tired tube
B) Mid 80's Sharp
C) Zenith with a tri-focus tube

For me, best domestic color set was Zenith CC II in a higher end model chassis. I liked the RCA Dimensia set better than I did the Zenith System 3.
